A newspaper has been called the living textbook... And it does live up to that name!
A newspaper can be used to enhance skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, math, social studies and science.
Unlike textbooks that are several years outdated by the time they get into students’ hands, the newspaper comes alive with information. The newspaper expands the curriculum with an unlimited amount of information to use as a background for learning activities.

What is NIE (Newspapers in Education)?
- An educational outreach program with a 20-year history.
- A source for professional development offered to educators at all grade levels.
- Newspaper In Education offers up-to-date teaching materials that are proven to elevate test scores while also improving literacy throughout our area.
Who can use NIE?
- Educators who teach grades K-12 in the private, public or home school environment.
- Students at all grade levels in the private, public or home school environment.
- Teachers who are fortunate enough to have SOL dollars can purchase NIE newspapers at the low educational rate of .07 cents per copy.
How does NIE work?
- The program is funded solely by NIE sponsors. Newspapers are made possible as long as efficient sponsorship is available.
- Teachers subscribe to The Bristol Herald Courier at the educational rate of .07 cents per copy.
- Newspapers are delivered to NIE teachers FREE of charge, unless the teachers have funding available to cover the cost of the papers.
- Workshops are offered annually to NIE teachers and a portion of their tuition fee is credited back to their classroom in NIE newspapers.
How can a business or individual become an NIE Sponsor?
- All businesses or corporations can sponsor NIE newspapers through donations of any amount and those funds will be used only to sponsor NIE classrooms.
- Individuals such as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles can be sponsors in supporting education by making a tax-deductible contribution for any amount to fund the NIE program.
- Call Eric Vaughn, NIE Coordinator, at 276.669.2181 ext. 3328 or email evaughn@bristolnews.com to discuss sponsor options, levels or solutions for placing NIE newspapers in the classroom.
