Michael L. Owens joined the Bristol Herald Courier as a staff writer in February 2008 after several years covering police and courts for The News Virginian, a daily newspaper based in Waynesboro, Va.

Owens has won journalism awards from the Virginia Press Association and the Virginia Bar Association, and currently covers breaking news and investigative topics in the Bristol area.

His journalism career began with his high school newspaper, continued with his college newspaper and from there graduated to weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines in Virginia's Hampton Roads region.

A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Owens earned a bachelor's degree in English from Old Dominion University in 1993.

In his spare time, Owens enjoys researching military history, especially World War II and the Vietnam War, builds models of wooden ships and military armor, and collects just about anything dealing with the pop-culture phenomenon of "Star Wars."
