The Battle of the Smokies is an annual event that features teams of media from Tennessee and North Carolina battling head-to-head in a Ryder cup-style format.
This year the site was two golf courses in the North Carolina High Country.
The first stop was at the Beech Mountain Club, way up high—at about 45-hundred feet in elevation…
The par-72 layout is a William Byrd design that plays to 6-thousand-225 yards. It rarely exceeds 75 degrees and it’s ridge top location allows you to see Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky on the clearest days.
The 2nd stop in the battle of the Smokies was the Sugar Mountain golf club behind the four seasons resort.
The 18 hole layout on 60 acres at the base of the south’s largest skiing complex was designed by Frank Duane.
The par 64 public golf course measures 4-thousand and 600 yards from the tips, and while it’s short the courses sloping greens provide the layout’s last line of defense.
And for the 2nd straight year “Team Tennessee” defeated the media boys from North Carolina 35-25.
The team was awarded the “coveted” two-foot trophy adorned with a sculpture of a black bear.
Next year’s event takes place at Eagle’s Landing Golf Club in Sevierville, Tennessee.
