Regional Briefs: BHC’s Gregory Honored With Writing Award

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Bristol Herald Courier sports writer Allen Gregory recently was recognized by the Virginia Outdoor Writers Association for excellence.
Gregory, of Abingdon, Va., joined the newspaper nearly 20 years ago and specializes in coverage of NASCAR and outdoors issues.
At the VOWA annual meeting March 19 in Charlottesville, Gregory was honored for winning third place in the Bob Gooch Column Writing competition for his column “Gunsmithing: Attention to Detail.”
VOWA represents a coalition of writers, photographers and video/film producers who inform various media on the out-of-doors and its enjoyment. Through this association, members “strive to improve ourselves in our craft and increase our knowledge and understanding of the outdoors.”

PREP BASEBALL
Tazewell 5, Grundy 4
Jon Hagy and Cody Billiter each had two hits, but it wasn’t enough as Grundy fell to Southwest District rival Tazewell. Jon Kelly suffered the loss on the mound, despite striking out nine.

COLLEGE BASEBALL
Bluefield 10, Emory & Henry 3 (Game 1)
Bluefield 12, Emory & Henry 7 (Game 2)
Emory & Henry College fell to 5-24 as the Wasps were swept by Bluefield College in a non-conference doubleheader.
Anthony Lowry and Codie Mitchell each went 3-for-7 on the day for E&H. Meanwhile, Marc Ailstock went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and smacked a three-run home run in tthe second game for the Wasps.
Bluefield (19-10) received seven hits on the day from Andrew Murray.

Tusculum 13, King College 3
Teon Richburg, Bryan Cruze and Craig Cant each had two hits, but it wasn’t nearly enough as King College was overwhelmed by Tusculum in a non-conference game in Bristol.
Tusculum (28-11) hammered out 19 hits and took advantage of four King errors. A six-run fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie and put the Pioneers ahead for good.
Eric Allen suffered the loss on the mound for King (21-8).

Georgia Tech 5, ETSU 4
The Bucs rallied late but fell short, falling to Georgia Tech 5-4 on Wednesday in Atlanta, Ga.
ETSU (6-21, 6-9) outhit the Yellow Jackets 10-5 as ETSU’s pitching combined to strike out ten batters.
The Bucs stranded nine runners in the game, including two in the ninth.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL
King 4, Covenant 3 (Game 1)
King 3, Covenant 2 (Game 2)
King College earn a sweep of a doubleheader with Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Covenant.
Kristie Keys and Laura Peters each had two hits in the first game to back a strong pitching performance from Ashley White.
In the second game, Amanda Crumpler homered, Whitney Tweed had two hits and Chelsea Osborne and Samantha Watts combined on a three-hitter.

Milligan 8, Va. Intermont 0 (Game 1)
Milligan 5, Va. Intermont 1 (Game 2)
Virginia Intermont was swept by Milligan in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Autumn Arney and Haley Odle managed VI’s lone hits in the opener. Arney also had two hits in the nightcap for the Cobras (3-17, 1-5). Milligan (17-12, 4-0) remained in first place in the AAC.

Vols drop Bucs
ETSU’s softball team went toe-to-toe with the 12th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader, and Tiffany Huff’s two-out, game-winning RBI single in the seventh lifted UT to a 4-3 victory.
Tennessee capped off the sweep with a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.
