Biffle In Right Place at BMS

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Greg Biffle couldn’t be in a better place.

He’s currently sitting in second place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings, just 73 points behind leader Kyle Busch.

And although he admits it’s still early in the season, Biffle also feels he and his team are on the verge of something special.

"I can just feel it," Biffle, 38, said. "I’ve felt this before and I can feel it building and buzzing now. We’ve got a good team and we’re just … focused; we’re focused. We’re coming to the track every day, ready to go, and we’re all really excited about what can happen. And it’s showing in these early races."

Biffle’s confidence shined bright on Friday morning at Bristol Motor Speedway.

He smiled when he spoke, he answered simple questions with detailed answers and his voice brimmed with enthusiasm.

It’s a change for Biffle, who was forced to deal with disappointment the last two seasons.

What seemed to be an unending series of frustrating setbacks pushed Biffle just beyond the reach of the Chase - he finished 14th in 2007 and 13th in 2006.

And Biffle, a native of Vancouver, Wash., openly wondered what it was going to take to get back on track.

The answer: simple, old-fashioned hard work.

And a little bit of luck.

"You can’t predict racing and you never know how things are going to turn out," said Biffle, driver of the No. 16 Ford owned by Jack Roush. "So we just kind of went back to the drawing board and figured out what we wanted to do and what we wanted to accomplish. And I think we’re doing it. And we’re doing it as a team - that’s the big thing."

Biffle’s short slide also had its benefits, though.

He reached back and reconnected with his past. He remembered why he got into racing in the first place. He drove on dirt tracks outside of Portland, Ore., and caught up with old friends.

And now, the same driver who has 12 career NASCAR wins and is a former Craftsman Truck and Busch series champion is able to fly under the radar.

Moreover, while top-draw drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon continue to draw the flash bulbs and wide eyes, and while others like Tony Stewart make waves, Biffle is able to just do his thing.

He races. He competes. And he collects top-10 finishes like it’s nothing.

Biffle knows it, too.

He’s enjoying his view of the world. And his place on the track.

"I’ll be ready. I know how this works," Biffle said smiling. "If this keeps up, people will be coming up to me at the end of the season, asking for things. And I’ll say, ‘Wait, where are you from?’ "
