Greeneville Astros Take Opening Series Over Bristol
Published: June 26, 2009
On Thursday night, the Greeneville Astros defeated the Bristol White Sox 3-2 and won their opening series by taking two of three on the road.
Just like the first two games, the Astros took the initial lead. In the second inning, 3rd round selection Jonathan Meyer collected his first professional hit with a double on a ground ball to left field. Julio Martinez, who had a big night at the plate, followed with another double to score Meyer and put the Astros on top 1-0.
In Martinez’s next at-bat in the fifth inning, he hit his first career homerun to right center field. He finished the night 3 for 4 with two doubles, a homerun, two RBI, and a run scored.
Frank Almonte, playing in his first game of the season, hit a double in the sixth inning that brought Miguel Arrendell around to score the Astros final run.
Meanwhile, Astros starter Jose Cisnero threw 5.0 scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and striking out three as he earned the win.
Bristol did manage to give the Astros a little scare late in the game. The Sox scored a run in the seventh inning off a wild pitch by Jeiler Castillo and another run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth. However, Bristol’s attempt at a comeback fell short when Nathan Pettus came in to pitch the final inning and earn his second save of the season.
The Astros play their home opener on Friday against the Danville Braves at 7:00pm.
