Wytheville, Va. – It was over before it even began.

George Wythe burned hot and bright on a cold Friday evening, putting up 29 first-quarter points against Grayson County.

The Maroons then tacked on 14 more in the second quarter.

By the time GW’s scoring spree had come to an end, the Maroons had defeated the Blue Devils 50-8 in a Region C, Division 2 first-round playoff game at Pendleton Stadium.

"I told our kids that this is the most focused I’ve ever seen them play," said George Wythe coach Donnie Pruitt. "I thought we came out tonight and played together as a team. I don’t know if we’ve ever scored this many points in the first quarter before."

The Maroons (10-1) now head to Giles at 1:30 p.m. on Friday for a second-round matchup.

The first quarter must have felt like a dream to George Wythe, as everything the Maroons tried worked to perfection.

Sweeps around the end turned into touchdowns. Runs up the middle turned into touchdowns. Go-up-and-grab-it passes turned into touchdowns. Even broken plays became touchdowns.

"Embarrassing, White! Embarrassing!" yelled out a Blue Devils (8-3) coach from the sideline, after George Wythe senior running back Seth White easily ran through Grayson County’s middle for a 17-yard score with 4 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

White’s score made it 14-0 Maroons. And it was only the beginning.

George Wythe put up 29 unanswered points before Grayson County ever found the end zone, and the Maroons ran 36 times for 330 yards.

"It really felt great," said GW senior running back Brandon Davis. "A lot of us have been playing together for a long time – since grade school. So this is it for us. And we want to go out with a bang."

White led the Maroons with 114 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, while Larry McCoy had five rushes for 106 yards.

Adam Bedsaul led GC with 79 yards on 11 rushes.

In sharp contrast to George Wythe’s relentless scoring attack, little – if anything – worked for the Blue Devils.

Even an onside-kick attempt failed – the ball ricocheted off the hard, cold grass and bounced backwards.

Grayson County had three turnovers, two of which killed promising drives.

And every time the Blue Devils faltered, the Maroons immediately capitalized.

"We’ve been practicing hard all week, and I think we came out here tonight and showed what we can do," Davis said. "Everyone gave 100 percent and everything clicked."
