Cumberland (Tenn.) University quarterback Matt Eads closed out the 2007 season in style.
The former Sullivan East High School star completed 19-of-32 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday in Cumberland’s 35-34 Mid-South Conference victory over Belhaven. Eads also rushed for a touchdown in the win.
Six tackles for McKinney
Former Powell Valley High School football standout Patrick McKinney had six tackles on Saturday for VMI in the Keydets’ 73-34 loss to Liberty University.
More on Miller
Hampden-Sydney College posted a 31-13 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday in the annual Old Dominion Athletic Conference showdown between the two rivals.
Zach Miller (Lebanon) started at wide receiver for Hampden-Sydney and finished with two carries for 15 yards.
Basham gets on the board
Virginia Tech freshman Elizabeth Basham scored the first points and grabbed the first rebound of her collegiate career on Sunday afternoon in the Hokies’ 103-64 non-conference women’s basketball victory over High Point University.
Basham, a former Abingdon High School standout, connected on the only shot she attempted in her seven minutes off the bench. She grabbed an offensive rebound with 6:58 left in the contest and then connected on a jumper with 5:13 remaining after an assist from teammate Lakeisha Logan.
The game also featured another former Southwest Virginia star. Sophomore Ashlee Samuels (George Wythe) scored four points, hauled down six rebounds and blocked a shot for High Point.
That came one night after Samuels collected a double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds) in a victory over King College.
Watkins puts on exhibition
Even though it was just an exhibition game against Athletes in Action, former Tennessee High star Courtney Watkins was impressive last week for the Liberty University women’s basketball team.
Watkins collected six points, nine rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in the Flames’ 80-74 victory.
Tranum makes debut
Freshman Tara Tranum (Tennessee High) made her collegiate debut over the weekend for the South Carolina-Upstate women’s basketball team.
Tranum played three minutes in the team’s 74-59 loss at the University of Kentucky and did not score.
Place places 42nd in regionals
Tennessee High graduate Stephanie Place competed in the NCAA South Regional women’s cross country meet this past weekend.
The Tennessee Tech runner placed 42nd and ran the 6K event in 22:26.
