COEBURN, Va. – Generally speaking, this All-Star game was headlined by the Generals.

Lee High’s Scotty Woliver, Jordan Laningham and Tanner Byington combined for 54 points to lead a group of Clinch Mountain District and Cumberland District standouts to an 83-79 win over players from
the Lonesome Pine District in the second annual FCA-Quiznos All-Star Senior Shootout boys basketball game at Coeburn High School.

Laningham earned MVP honors for the winning side after tossing in 17 points. Woliver led the white-clad Cumberland/CMD standouts with 24 points, while Byington (13 points) and Craig Ward (three points) also represented the Lee High Generals in the event.

“Me and Scotty have been playing together since sixth or seventh grade,” Laningham said. “All year, he and I pretty much know what each other are thinking on the floor.”

The Cumberland/CMD All-Stars raced out to a 26-7 lead and then held off the LPD squad down the stretch for the victory.

The LPD’s comeback was spearheaded by Powell Valley guard Jordan Martin. Martin scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the second half and was the LPD squad’s MVP.

Peyton Kendrick of Clintwood added 11 points in a losing effort. Meanwhile, Thomas Walker’s Dude Overton scored 10 points for the winning team.

As for Laningham, it was an eventful day. Along with his MVP trophy, he also won the event’s 3-point shootout.

“I was kind of disappointed that basketball season was over,” Laningham said. “This is good just to come out and play at least one more game.”
