APPALACHIA, Va. – Forrest Stuart had 20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, six steals and three blocks as Appalachia remained Southwest Virginia’s lone unbeaten boys basketball team with a 70-34 victory over Jenkins, Ky.
Stuart hit 9-of-13 shots from the field for Appy (9-0), which hit 53 percent of its shots as a team. Marvin Fetchner added 12 points and blocked 11 shots in the win, while Josh Allen had six points and five rebounds.

John Battle 59, Holston 53
Michael Johnson scored 21 points and hauled down 10 rebounds as John Battle posted its first win of the season with a victory over Washington County rival Holston.
Andrew Fleenor added 15 points for the Trojans.
Eric Mefford led the Cavaliers with 15 points, while Jeffrey Bramlett added 14 points.

Council 61, Ervinton 30
Otto Fletcher scored 22 point sand Chris Tiller (12 points) also reached double digits in Council’s non-district road win.

J.I. Burton 65, St. Paul 55
Daniel Deaton (18 points) and Jaycob Coleman (15 points, 10 steals, eight rebounds) starred in J.I. Burton’s 65-55 victory over St. Paul.
Timmy Goins added 10 points and six steals for Burton, while Devon Talley dished out six assists.
Tyler Phillips scored 15 points to lead St. Paul, while Corey Ellis chipped in 13 in the loss.

Twin Valley 72, Grundy 46
Hunter Simpson scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half as Twin Valley trounced Grundy.

Abingdon 78, Tazewell 66
Colby Hunt fired in 37 points as Abingdon earned a Southwest District road win over Tazewell.
Hunt had 24 points in the opening half as Abingdon opened up a 46-27 halftime lead. Nathaniel Funk added 15 points for the Falcons, while Jacob Hess (10 points) also reached double figures.
Jared Angles led Tazewell with 16 points, while Brandon Pauley added 15 points in a losing effort.

GIRLS

Council 51, Ervinton 45
Stephanie Cornett scored 21 points, Council held Ervinton standout Kelly Rasnick to just four points and the Cobras hit their free throws down the stretch in a non-district win.

J.I. Burton 56, St. Paul 30
Ra’Shelle Miller racked up 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals as J.I. Burton blasted non-district rival St. Paul.
Mary Stallard added 10 points for Burton (8-1).
Rachel Evans (12 points) and Emily Salyer (11 points) led the way for St. Paul.

Twin Valley 45, Grundy 42
Katie Jo Lester’s basket with 1:14 left and Kaitlin Wimmer’s free throw with 28 seconds remaining gave Twin Valley a win over Grundy. Lester finished with 19 points as the Panthers improved to 6-4.

J.J. Kelly 55, Gate City 30
Senior guard Jaydee Brewer scored 17 points and came up with seven steals as J.J. Kelly cruised past Gate City.
Leigha Lawson added 10 points for Kelly, while freshman Allison Mullins hauled down 10 rebounds.
Taylor Evans had 11 points to lead Gate City.

Coeburn 39, Pound 35
Coeburn rallied in the fourth quarter to post a non-district win at Pound.
Kayla Mitchell led Coeburn with 17 points. She was the only player in the game to finish in double figures. Samantha Balthis led Pound with nine points.

Abingdon 35, Tazewell 34
Samantha Whittmore scored 12 points as Abingdon outlasted Tazewell in a Southwest District game.
Lauren Wilson added nine points for Abingdon, which survived a potential game-winning shot by Tazewell with 2.4 seconds left.
