PREP ROUNDUP: Sullivan East Football Team Closes Season With Loss
BLUFF CITY, Tenn. — Sophomore Austin Glover rushed for 137 yards and two scores on 29 carries Friday but the Sullivan East Patriots still dropped a 38-14 decision to Elizabethton.
Cody Forbes supplied two touchdowns for Elizabethton, which rushed for 155 yards and passed for 142.
The Patriots were forced to play the final seven games without running back Caleb Looney after the senior suffered a broken leg.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
T. Valley 3, Haysi 0
Katie Jo Lester collected 12 kills and Alison Rife added 11 assists as Twin Valley won the Black Diamond District match, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.
Kayla Goodman and Amanda Adkins collected nine service points apiece for Twin Valley, which finished third in the BDD. Tanee Hayes led Haysi with four kills and six assists.
Twin Valley will host the Black Diamond District tournament, which begins Nov. 5.
The BDD volleyball coaches meeting will be held Nov.1 at 2:30 p.m. Peking Restaurant in Grundy.
Carroll County 3, Tazewell 0
Sarah Singleton collected 10 kills and 20 service points as the Cavaliers won the Southwest District match, 25-18, 27-25, 25-21.
Jessi Goad (17 assists), Dionna Reece (10 kills) and Honesty Rogers (15 digs) all played well for Carroll County, now 19-1. The Cavaliers will host the SWD tournament next week.
John Battle 3, Virginia High 1
Ashley Bryant had 15 kills and six aces, leading John Battle to a 25-14, 25-11, 18-25, 25-10 Clinch Mountain District victory over Virginia High.
Brittni Altmann (34 assists, 13 digs), Abby Davis (18 digs, five kills) and Kelsey Griffitts (14 kills, five blocks) also played well for Battle.
Lydia Hayes had 27 assists and three aces for Virginia High, while Katie Curcio and Taylor Edmondson added nine kills apiece. Kendra Smith (10 kills, nine digs) and Nikki Nelms (22 digs, six kills) also played well for the Bearcats.
Smith, Blow lead THS
Tennessee High’s Michelle Smith had a strong performance during the Region 1-AAA girls cross country meet on Thursday at Daniel Boone High School.
Smith, a junior, placed 12th in the 5K race with a time of 22:14.72. Meanwhile, Sullivan Central’s Leslie Ecklund placed 28th in 23:36.56. THS finished seven in the team standings.
Andre’ Blow led Tennessee High in the boys race, placing 16th in 17:43.92. Greg Hanson (23rd, 18:29.11) and Doni McCarty (27th, 18:42.41) also fared well for the Vikings, which finished fifth in the team standings.
Hudlow finishes 15th
Sullivan East High School freshman Dalton Hudlow led the local contingent on Thursday during the TSSAA Region 1-A/AA cross country meet at Daniel Boone High School.
Hudlow placed 15th after navigating the 5K course in 18 minutes, 58.16 seconds. Cliff Hawkins (36th, 21:13.05) was the other top finisher for East, which placed sixth in the team standings.
In the girls race, Sullivan East sophomore Sami Austin was the top finisher. She placed 29th in 25:25.12.
Balthis, Pound shine at LPD meet
Samantha Balthis won the individual crown and also helped Pound High School win the girls title at Wednesday’s Lonesome Pine District meet at Camp Bethel in Wise County.
Balthis won the girls race in 22 minutes, 12 seconds. Pound win the girls team title by 19 points behind the performances of Balthis, Brianne Foster (3rd, 24:07) and Casey Mullins (4th, 24:19).
Powell Valley won the boys team title behind the strength of four runners placing in the top 10. Clintwood’s Tyler Vanover was the LPD boys individual champ, crossing the finish line in 17:46
