HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Davis, Devils Edge Hurley

Castlewood quarterback Corey Davis came up with a clutch performance on Friday.
CASTLEWOOD – Corey Davis delivered some late-game heroics to lift Castlewood to a 40-34 win in a non-district shootout against Hurley.
The teams alternated scores throughout the game until Davis intercepted a pass and returned it 36 yards to the Hurley 20 with 1:36 remaining. Then, on the fifth play of the drive with 10.4 seconds left, Davis tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Devin Puckett to account for the winning margin.
Ryan Phillips carried 25 times for 170 yards. Casey Phillips ran 12 times for 70 yards, and he scored two touchdowns.
Coeburn 33, Rye Cove 24
Coeburn kept its Cumberland District title hopes alive with a road win over Rye Cove on Friday night.
Quarterback Jon Dean completed just one pass in the game, but it was a big one as he hit Hunter Bond with a 26-yard pass in the final quarter to put Coeburn ahead.
Shane Bright later scored his fourth touchdown of the game to seal the win for the Blue Knights. Head coach Greg Mullins’ team finished with 391 rushing yards.
J.I. Burton 56, Pound 7
Jaycob Coleman didn’t touch the ball a whole lot, but he made a lot out of every attempt to help power host J.I. Burton to a 56-7 Lonesome Pine District win against Pound.
Coleman carried three times for 185 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a pass for 30 more yards and a touchdown.
Appalachia 32, St. Paul 26
Appalachia grabbed its first win of the season over St. Paul on Friday night in a non-district clash.
Cody Carter led the Bulldogs (1-6) with 29 carries, 233 yards and three TDs. St. Paul’s (2-4) Denver Fritz had 16 rushes for 137 yards.
Carroll County 21, Abingdon 18
Carroll County’s Zach Surratt blocked what would have been a game-tying Abingdon field goal with nine seconds remaining.
The Cavaliers’ Cody Mabe ran for 140 yards and two TDs.
Abingdon was led by Braden Coleman’s 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Powell Valley 59, Thomas Walker 13
Myron Pinkston had a monster game to lead Powell Valley to a non-district win against Thomas Walker.
Pinkston was 5-of-6 pass for 115 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to Lucas Fannon. He ran for 219 yards and three touchdowns, including a 99-yard romp. He also returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown.
Gate City 44, John Battle 7
John Battle’s trip to Legion Field on Friday night resulted in a loss.
Battle (0-6) did manage to rack up 214 yards in total offense and recived a 1-yard touchdown run from Michael Johnson in the final moments.
Giles 11, Lebanon 7
Virginia Tech recruit Cody Journell led Giles (3-2) to a win over the Pioneers in their non-district matchup as he rushed for a score and also booted a 45-yard field goal.
Drew Helbert scored the lone TD for Lebanon (3-3).
Haysi 49, Ervinton 0
Allen Owens had three catches for 113 yards in Haysi’s blowout of Dickenson County rival Ervinton. Owens made all three receptions count as he caught three TD passes. Chris Fleming had 257 passing yards for the Tigers (5-1).
George Wythe 35, Patrick Henry 7
George Wythe’s Brandon Atwell nine catches for 177 receiving yards led the Maroons past Hogoheegee District-rival Patrick Henry.
Graham 47, Grundy 21
David Marrs compiled 142 yards through the air and threw two touchdown passes to Torren Byrd as the Graham G-Men rolled at Mitchell Stadium.
Sullivan South 42, Sullivan Central 0
Sullivan Central is still searching for its first win, as the Cougars were blanked by Sullivan South.
Bradley Davenport rushed for two touchdowns and threw another to Kaleb Kitzmiller to lead the Rebels.
Daniel Boone 35, Cocke County 0
Jeremy Hood led for Daniel Boone in their win over Cocke County. Hood was 15 for 62. Hayden Chandley led the defense with an interception return, as well as a fumble recovery.
Tri-Cities Christian 45, Pleasant View 14
Cooper Singletary rushed for 158 yards and Tri-Cities Christian earned an impressive road win in Nashville on Friday night.
Tri-Cities shut down a Plesant View offense that had been averaging over 40 points per game.
Greeneville 34, Volunteer 13
Trevon Hall rushed for 214 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdiwns in Greeneville’s win over Volunteer.
