Former Virginia High star Stallard sets high marks

It hasn’t taken long for Tonya Stallard to make a mark for the women’s indoor track and field team at the U.S. Military Academy.
The former multi-sport star at Virginia High won the pentathlon and 60-meter hurdles at last weekend’s Army Open in West Point, N.Y.
Stallard, a freshman, won the pentathlon on Friday with a score of 2,388 points. The following day, Stallard won the hurdles with a time of 9.36 seconds, holding off teammate Hallie Huggins for the victory.
Place sets records
Former Tennessee High star and current Tennessee Tech runner Stephanie Place had a record-setting day earlier this month at the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City.
Place set the Tennessee Tech women’s indoor records in the 5,000-meter run (17:47.20) and the 3,000-meter run (10:13.86).
Bates makes impact
Freshman Kayli Bates has fared well thus far for the Milligan College women’s indoor track and field team.
The former J.J. Kelly High School standout has shown her versatility for the Buffaloes and has competed in the 55-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump, triple jump and the 1,600-meter relay team for the Buffaloes in meets in Johnson City, Murfreesboro and Boone, N.C.
Tennessee High graduate Lili Zaldana is also on the Milligan roster. The freshman finished 11th in the women’s mile at this past weekend’ Middle Tennessee Classic.
Watkins watch
Former Tennessee High star Courtney Watkins had another productive week for the Liberty University women’s basketball team.
In last Monday’s 71-44 victory over Coastal Carolina, Watkins had 11 points and four rebounds. On Saturday, she scored five points and dished out a team-high six assists as Liberty claimed an 88-41 victory over Presbyterian.
Watkins has started all 19 of games for Liberty (17-2) and is averaging nine points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
Two points for Tranum
Freshman Tara Tranum (Tennessee High) scored two points and grabbed three rebounds in seven minutes off the bench last week for the University of South Carolina-Upstate women’s basketball team in an 82-47 loss to Lipscomb.
Shortridge shines again
Logan Shortridge, a former Twin Valley High School standout, continues to shine for the Bluefield State College men’s basketball team.
Shortridge has led Bluefield State (1-15) in scoring the past two games. He scored 13 points last Thursday in an 82-59 loss to Pitt-Johnstown. He followed that up with a 12-point outing on Saturday in an 84-46 setback to Shepherd.
Shortridge is averaging 6.8 points per game. Jeremiah Lester – another former Twin Valley star on the Bluefield State roster – is averaging 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Local player vs. local team
Michael Scorsome (Abingdon) played 10 minutes on Sunday for Bridgewater College in the Eagles’ 129-112 Old Dominion Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over Emory & Henry.
Scorsome scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out one assist in the game.
Latest on Larimer
Freshman Thomas Larimer scored four points on Sunday for the Eastern Mennonite University men’s basketball team in a 103-75 Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss to Guilford.
The Chilhowie High School graduate hit 2-of-3 field goals en route to four points in his five minutes off the bench.
Swimming stuff
Freshman Marcy Hullander (Tennessee High) is making a splash for the King College swimming team.
During a meet with Mars Hill on January 19, Hullander won the women’s 50 freestyle medley and the 100-yard butterfly. She qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 100 butterlfy with a time of 1:04.81.
