Locals in college: Mullins healthy and ready for Greensboro

Ashley Mullins was limited to six games last season for the UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team due to a thumb injury. She appears ready for the 2007-08 season.
The former Honaker High School star finished with seven points, two rebounds and a steal for UNC Greensboro in a 52-40 exhibition win over St. Paul’s College last Friday.
Mullins, a junior, was 3-of-9 from the field and connected on 1-of-3 attempts from 3-point range.
The 5-foot-11 Mullins averaged two points and 1.8 rebounds in her six appearances last season for the Spartans.
Cluesman vs. WVU
Concord (W.Va.) University’s Jamie Cluesman tested her skills against a NCAA Division I opponent on Sunday in the Mountain Lions’ 89-56 exhibition loss to nationally ranked West Virginia.
Cluesman, a Lee High graduate, dished out a game-high eight assists and also added six points, four rebounds and a steal in the loss.
McMurray in Charlottesville
Former Gate City High School star Jesse McMurray started for Carson-Newman College on Sunday in the Eagles’ 124-65 exhibition loss to the University of Virginia.
McMurray struggled to find his shot, finishing just 2-of-12 from the field and 2-of-11 from 3-point range en route to a six-point night. He also added three rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.
Zach attack
Former Lebanon High School star Zach Miller made contributions in several different ways for Hampden-Sydney College in the Tigers’ 34-21 non-conference football victory over Huntingdon on Saturday.
Miller had two catches for 30 yards and also had two carries for 9 yards. Meanwhile, the only pass he attempted was intercepted.
Ball gets defensive
Honaker High School graduate Tyler Ball made two tackles for Randolph-Macon College in a 24-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Bridgewater on Saturday.
Six Stops for McKinney
Linebacker Patrick McKinney (Powell Valley) was in on six tackles for the VMI football team in the Keydets’ 37-28 setback to Charleston Southern on Saturday. Three of the stops were of the solo variety.
Martin gets five kills
Freshman Kayla Martin (Rural Retreat) had five kills for the Concord (W.Va.) University volleyball team in the Mountain Lions’ loss to Pitt-Johnstown last week.
Pitt-Johnstown won by scores of 30-15, 30-19, 30-19.
Locals at Lees-McRae
Former Southwest Virginia cross country standouts April Harris (Lee High) and Ashley May (Chilhowie) helped Lees-McRae College win the NCAA Division II women’s Southeast Regional in Wingate, N.C.
Both Harris and May will compete in the DII national championship meet.
Harris was 11th in the regional meet, while May also earned all-region honors with a 14th place showing.
