Rose-Hulman wide receiver Sutton Coleman
Sutton Coleman has already cemented himself as a star in one sport at the Rose-Hulman (Indiana) Institute of Technology. Now, he’s doing it another.
Coleman scored the first touchdown of his college football career on Oct. 24 in a 50-14 victory over Bluffton (Ohio).
A Lebanon High School graduate, Coleman caught a 61-yard scoring strike from Derek Eitel early in the fourth quarter. It was just his second catch of the season.
The 6-foot-2, 160-pound Coleman has seen time at wide receiver and returning punts and kickoffs this fall for the Engineers.
He was a NCAA Division III All-American in the 400-meter hurdles last spring for Rose-Hulman’s track team.
McCoy for real
Former George Wythe High School standout Larry McCoy continues to play well at the running back position for Duquesne University. The redshirt freshman gained 70 yards on seven carries on Saturday in the Dukes’ 23-17 double overtime loss to Wagner.
McCoy has gained 649 yards on 131 carries this season and scored three touchdowns.
Vandeventer honored
The awards just continue to pile up for University of Tennessee freshman golfer Jay Vandeventer.
The Bristol, Tenn., native was recently named an American Junior Golf Association Rolex All-American. Vandeventer earned honorable mention status from the AJGA after a productive showing in summer tournaments.
Vandeventer, who played at the tradition-rich Baylor School during his prep career, played in several tournaments for UT this fall. His best showing was a 26th-place finish at the
UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
More goals for Martin
Former Sullivan Central High School standout Rachel Martin has scored three goals and dished out three assists for the Milligan College women’s soccer team. Milligan finished second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season standings.
Locals at Lees-McRae
April Harris (Lee High) and Ashley May (Chilhowie) recently helped the Lees-McRae women’s cross country team finish second in the Conference Carolinas Championships.
Harris placed 10th in the meet with a time of 19 minutes, 48 seconds. May finished 25th in 20:52.
Union on top
The Union (Ky.) College volleyball team currently leads the Appalachian Athletic Conference and the Bulldogs have received contributions from a local player.
Sullivan East High School graduate Katie Harris has appeared in 10 matches for the Bulldogs and has 24 digs and a service ace to her credit.
