LOCALS IN COLLEGE: Another big day for Larry McCoy
Larry McCoy’s freshman season at Duquesne University has been full of memorable moments. However, none could match the performance the redshirt freshman running back pulled off last week.
McCoy scored five touchdowns in Duquesne’s 45-42 victory over Sacred Heart and tied a Northeast Conference and school single-game record for TDs.
McCoy, a George Wythe High School graduate, scored on runs of 2, 1, 4, 13 and 1 yards in tying former Duquesne standout Mike Hilliard’s school and conference record
established in 2003.
The NEC honored McCoy with the conference’s rookie of the week honor, the third time he’s won it. McCoy has gained 770 yards and scored eight times this season for the Dukes.
Good weekend for Graves
Abingdon High School graduate Griff Graves continues to help the Syracuse University men’s cross country team collect trophies.
Graves finished 12th in 31:20 while helping Syracuse take the team title at last week’s NCAA Northeast Regional meet. His strong showing also helped him collect a spot on the
U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Northeast All-Region team.
Graves and his teammates will compete in the NCAA National Championships on Monday in Indiana.
Buckhannon gets on board
Ashley Buckhannon scored more than 2,000 points during her outstanding career at George Wythe High School. It only took her one game to get on the board for the Radford University women’s basketball team.
Buckhannon finished with two points and a steal for Radford in the Highlanders’ 70-40 season-opening loss to William & Mary on Sunday. The freshman sank two free throws with 1:09 left in the first half for the first points of her collegiate career.
Moody vs. nation’s best
The first week of Whitney Moody’s college basketball career will be hard to top.
The former Sullivan Central High School star and current Carson-Newman College freshman got to test her skills against two of the top women’s basketball programs in the nation – Tennessee and North Carolina – in exhibition games.
On Nov. 5 at the University of Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling Arena, Moody had five points in C-N’s 124-34 loss to the Lady Vols.
Five days later, she had three points and an assist in a 121-52 setback to UNC.
Hayes helps TWC
Virginia High graduate Mallory Hayes made contributions for the Tennessee Wesleyan College volleyball team this fall. Hayes had 31 digs and 10 aces in 24 matches for the Bulldogs and earned a spot on the Appalachian Athletic Conference’s All-Academic team.
Talley earns top honor
Freshman golfer David Talley was named the Tusculum College Student-Athlete of the Month for October. The Virginia High graduate won medalist honors at two fall tournaments and has emerged as the top player for the Pioneers.
Lovett makes debut
Freshman Jared Lovett (Abingdon) made his debut for the Yale University men’s swimming team this past weekend in a dual meet against Columbia.
Lovett had third-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley.
