WISE, Va. — The University of Virginia’s College at Wise’s running game finally came through as the Highland Cavaliers collected a 28-13 Mid-South Conference win over Pikeville (Ky.) College on Thursday night at Carl Smith Stadium.

Jyon Barclay rushed for a season-high 99 yards on 20 carries and scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter. UVa.-Wise (5-4) finished with 151 rushing yards, having accounted for just 669 in their first eight games combined.

Amondre Johnson also rushed for a score, while wide receiver Jason Lovett caught eight passes for 124 yards and a TD and added two carries for 59 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cavs took control with a 21-point outburst in the second quarter. Johnson opened the scoring with a 1-yard run, while Keith McBride returned an interception for a score.

Barclay scored with 6:53 left and Wise QB Brad Robbins hit wide receiver Brad Ricker on a the 2-point conversion to give the Cavs a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Robbins completed 15 of 26 passes for 214 yards with one touchdown and one interception. UVa.-Wise senior receiver Matt Barbour had two catches for 28 yard and became the first pass-catcher in program history with 200 career receptions.

McBride led the UVa.-Wise defense with four tackles, a sack and his interception. The Cavs limited Pikeville (2-5) to just 115 yards of total offense.

John Mathis and Danny Hinkle were in on eight tackles apiece, while Josh Weaver made six stops.

UVa.-Wise returns to play on Nov. 7 at home against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Gate City 3, Virginia High 0
Defending VHSL Group A state champion Gate City continued to roll, posting a 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 victory over Virginia High.
Lindsey Burke (11 kills) and Ashton Dougherty (eight kills) led the Blue Devils at the net, while Ashlee Mustard tallied 18 digs and Callie Sloop dished out 36 assists.
Lydia Hayes had 12 assists and six digs to lead VHS, while Katie Curcio (11 kills) and Paige Adkins (15 digs) were also strong in defeat for the Bearcats.

Holston 3, George Wythe 0
Taylor Doss and Kelsey Arrington each had eight kills as Holston posted a 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 win over Hogoheegee District rival George Wythe.
Samantha Roberts added eight aces for Holoston, while Tiffany Barr (seven kills) and Erin Martin (12 assists, four aces) also came up with big performances for the Cavaliers.
Carla Suthers had 27 assists for GW, while Chelsey Hensley and Sara Pugh each recorded 13 digs. Alora King and Carlee Vaught combined for 17 kills to lead the Maroons at the net.

Powell Valley 3, Honaker 0
Powell Valley’s Cassie Sturgill dished out 33 assists in the Vikings’ 25-12, 25-20, 25-15 non-district win.
Kaylla Holdway (18 kills) and Tasha Trent (15 kills, 11 digs, four aces) once again controlled the net for PV (15-3), while Clarissa Blanton contributed nine digs.

Appalachia 3, J.J. Kelly 0
Katie Brooks and Brandee Childress combined for 17 kills for Appalachia in a 29-27, 25-14, 25-12 Lonesome Pine District victory over visiting J.J. Kelly.
Chelsea Hylton doled out 14 assists for Appalachia (11-8, 5-4) and also hustled her way to five digs. Kelly (6-13, 3-6) was led by the trio of Ashley Mullins (10 kills), Allison Mullins (seven blocks, six kills) and Courtney Brooks (13 assists).

Lee High 3, Lebanon 0
Lee High posted a 25-13, 25-12, 25-23 Clinch Mountain District win over Lebanon as Morgan Province and Hillary Lyness combined for 19 kills.
Cara Owens had 16 service points for Lee, while Rebecca Lawson dished out 24 assists. Lebanon’s Brianne Vencill and Kelsey Slate combined for 13 kills.

Mtn. Empire Baptist 3, Tenn. Avenue Christian Academy 1
Mountain Empire Baptist wrapped up the regular season with a victory over Tennessee Avenue Christian Academy.
Members of the team are Rowan Barker, Rachel Fritts, Katlynn Stout, Angel Bordelon, Rachel White, Brooke Grubb, Andrea Helton, Beth Edwards, Rachel Edwards and Rebecca Edwards.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Union (Ky.) 3, Milligan 0
Union (Ky.) College snapped Milligan’s four-match winning streak with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-22 Appalachian Athletic Conference win.
Former Sullivan Central High School standout Holly English led Milligan (14-12, 8-4) with 10 kills, while Erin Biddle added 12 assists and 10 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

Hudlow, Austin lead East
Sullivan East High School runners Dalton Hudlow and Sami Austin had the best showings for the Patriots on Thursday during the Three Rivers Conference meet in Kingsport.
Hudlow finished second to Elizabethton’s David Laporte in the boys race. Hudlow crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 56 seconds. Laporte won in 17:32.
Aaron Boling (9th, 20:48) also had a top-10 showing for East, which finished second to Elizabethton in the team standings.
In the girls race, Austin led the East contingent with a fifth-place showing and time of 25:43. East’s Kelsey Bare finished 10th in the race for the Patriots, clocking in at 28:37.
