BRIEFS: Former Virginia High Standout Leads King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Former Virginia High standout Hannah Shankel scored two goals to lead King College to a 4-0 women’s soccer win over Reinhardt College on Saturday afternoon.
Shankel scored in the 62nd minute and found the back of the net again four minutes later. King also received goals from Emma Wells and Morgan Shelton, while Maggie Lynskey and Jessica Ebanks led the Tornado defense.
Milligan 1, Tenn. Wesleyan 0
Nine Henriksson’s goal in overtime clinched Milligan’s Appalachian Athletic Conference home win.
Emory & Henry 3, Bridgewater 2
Senior night turned out to be a good for the lone senior on the Emory & Henry College soccer team.
Erik Olson scored a goal in the 47th minute to highlight the Wasps’ victory. P.J. Henson added two goals for E&H (3-13, 1-8), which led 1-0 at halftime.
E&H goalkeeper Daniel Mills made six saves.
Carson-Newman 3, King 1
King College’s Tom Winspear scored on an assist from Colby Childress early in the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Tornado lost to Carson-Newman.
Robert Hill led C-N with two goals.
Chilhowie 28, PH 2
Chilhowie used a balanced attack, getting strong rushing and passing stats, in a Hogoheegee District road win over Patrick Henry on Friday night.
Quarterback Cody McMahan threw for 116 yards and a touchdown pass to J-Rod Blevins, while Aaron Conley (12 carries, 81 yards, one TD) led the rushing attack. Tyler Austin and Daniel Ashby also scored touchdowns for the Warriors.
CAK 14, Elizabethton 13
The Christian Academy of Knoxville edged Elizabethton in a battle of two of the state’s top Class 3A teams on Friday night.
Elizabethton’s lone scores came on a pair of touchdown passes.
Emory & Henry 3, Va. Wesleyan 0
Former Northwood High School standout Twyla Sessor tallied 18 digs, leading Emory & Henry to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory.
Rachel Fertitta added 16 kills and six blocks for E&H (17-5, 5-4), while Kim Caudill (six blocks, five kills), Samantha Shepard (eight kills), Erin Holben (16 digs) and Reagan Clarke (37 assists) also keyed the Wasps’ victory.
Graham 3, Abingdon 2
The Graham G-Girls rolled to a 25-20, 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 15-13 win over Abingdon in a Southwest District match played Thursday.
Sabrina Viers led Abingdon with 15 kills and nine digs, while Taylor Leland contributed 14 kills and 13 digs. Kate Bays (14 digs) and Kaitlyn Prewitt (25 assists, 13 digs) also played well for Abingdon.
Gold 4, Blue 1
Senior outfielder Katy Jett went 2-for-3 and blasted a go-ahead home run in the third inning to lead the Gold past the Blue in the fifth annual Blue/Gold intrasquad scrimmage at East Tennessee State University.
Cheniece Cason added three hits for the Gold squad. Trisha Massenzo homered for the Blue team.
King swimmers shine
Freshmen Michelle Donehi and Emily Vaughn each won two events to lead the King College women’s swimming team to a 132-81 dual meet victory over Milligan College on Saturday.
Donehi won the 800 freestyle and 400 freestyle races, while Vaughn placed first in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Malorie McBride (100 butterfly) and Kelsey Copeland (100 freestyle) also won for the Tornado.
The Milligan men posted a 131-81 victory over King. Winners for the King men were sophomore Wayne Oliver (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle), senior Daniel Kidd (800 freestyle) and freshman Brad Wright (400 freestyle).
