ESSENTIAL GRADUATION INFORMATION

The 2008 commencement ceremony for Appalachia High School is set for May 24, at 10 a.m., inside the school gymnasium.

On Friday, May 23, at 1:30 p.m., Class Day will be held in the AHS auditorium, where awards and scholarships will be presented.  The highlight of the occasion is the ceremonial singing of the junior and senior classes, the daisy chain march, and the recognition of the senior class with a senior slide show.  Everyone is invited to attend.

The class flower is the daisy, and the class colors are blue and gold.

Devin Brickey and Laura Barnett were crowned King and Queen of the prom.

TOP 12 OF THE CLASS OF 2008

Samuel Lee Green, III (Co-Valedictorian): Earned a GPA of 4.12, is the son of Sammy and Natalie Green of Appalachia.  Lee has participated in the BETA Club, the FCA, Spanish Club, and has also been a member the band.  He achieved three perfect SOL scores in Algebra I, Algebra II, and U.S. History during his high school career.  He has enjoyed dual enrollment at MECC with classes in calculus, English 111 and 112, political science, and anatomy. His athletic career includes participation on the golf and tennis teams, and he is the recipient of the Sister Anne Christina Scholarship.  After graduation Lee will attend UVA of Wise where he will enter the pre-med program and practice as a dentist or doctor in Southwest Virginia.

Alexander Burgan Head (Co-Valedictorian): Earned a GPA of 4.12, is the son of Louis Head and April Burgan of Appalachia.  Alex has participated in the BETA Club, FCCLA, Spanish Club and has been a member of the marching and concert bands.  He is also on the yearbook staff.  His athletic career includes participation on the football team for three years, the tennis team for three years, and track & field for two years.  He achieved perfect scores on his English 11, Ancient History, and Alegbra II SOL’s.  Alex has enjoyed dual enrollment at MECC with classes in pre-calculus, Calculus I, English 111 and 112, and Political Science 211 and 212.  He is the recipient of the Slemp Scholarship, the AIMS Scholarship, and the Ford C. Quillen Scholarship.  After graduation Alex plans to attend UVA of Wise and major in history and earn his teaching degree.

Cassandra Yvette Wireman (Salutatorian): Earned a GPA of 3.97, is the daughter of Andrietta Marcum of Norton, Va.  Cassandra has participated in the BETA Club and has been a member of the marching band for seven years.  She has also been a member of the PACE team and has enjoyed dual enrollment with classes in Pre Calculus I and II, Calculus I, Life Span Development II, English 111 and 112, Political Science 211 and 212, and Psychology.  After graduation Cassandra plans to attend King College and major in accounting.
