Writer Offers Truck Center Options

With all due respect to Debra McCown’s usual balanced reporting, I feel her coverage of the “truck stop project” on June 9 did not truly characterize the public presentations to the Washington County Board of Supervisors. Only a handful spoke in favor of granting the rezoning from agricultural to business, which would allow the truck stop to move in. In sharp contrast, the room was filled with more than 100 people, with at least two-thirds opposing the truck stop at the proposed location and a large percentage of these making public presentations.

And, while a petition with 200 signatures of supporters was offered, there were two petitions presented holding 800 signatures in opposition, most from Meadowview residents and volunteered, not solicited, at the two Meadowview businesses where the petitions had been placed.

McCown’s article omitted the convincing research presented by several Emory & Henry College science professors regarding the health and safety risks, as well as increased crimes that the truck stop would bring.  The crime statistics presented were impressive and were filed from occurrences around the Glade Spring truck stop.

I also found it interesting that so much of the reporting focused on the present property owner’s presentation. She spoke of how wonderful it was growing up there on the farm, yet she and her son want to deprive present residents of the same experience. This family’s focus on profiteering from the sale of the property may be equal to the greed of the Love Corp. since the property owner can choose to sell to a business that does not present the same health and safety hazards and the truck stop can locate elsewhere in Washington County.

Both of these thoughts were offered by most of the presenters in opposition and omitted from McCown’s article.

I also think this is a new tatic they are using to keep us from figuring out their real agenda, I’m sure there are some vague ties to the good ol VOP. I think they know they are losing this battle and they don’t know what to do about it.

Now that we know who the VOP are we will be keeping a close eye on them.

New Agent, you have shed a little light on this which makes me wonder if she may also be associated with the V.O.P as well. If so it would be interesting as to why you would invite D. McCown to your meeting and then call her out in an article. I am not sure but it seems as if this group in now grasping at straws but never fear after this travel center is approved, I am sure they will find another growth oppurtunity to protest. I believe the V.O.P has opened some eyes in the county and I am sure they will be watched closely from now on by another group.

I don’t know what board meeting Bunny attended either, did they slip one in that I missed? I bet this lady was not even there.

They were NO convincing studies done by the E&H people, just spreading their opinions with nothing to back it up with.

As for the crime, My Hopp wants to twist things to make it look like Glade has became crime central in Wash. Co. Va, this is by far not accurate. Anyone who has a question about this needs to contact the Sheriff, he will tell you the facts about this. His people spend alot of time at Wallmart but I never hear all these calls to the tuck stop in Glade.

And for the petitions, the VOP was going door to door in Abingdon handing out their literature and gathering names, why not in Meadowview? because they know MOST people in Meadowview are for this.

Well NYY, it looks like Miss Bunny is another writer that is in with the unitarian universalist church of the highlands, wonder why their membership has taken such an interest in this travel center?

I guess Dayle is just trying to help her husband, Dr. Fred Hebard in his fight against the travel center and is getting fellow church members to write letters, just like Miss Linder did earlier. A Massage Therapist from Damascus wouldn’t have much other reason to write this, not that I can see anyways.

Bunny, hop on back to Damascus and don’t worry about what happens in little ol Meadowview.

After reading this article, I was in total disbelief. This person apparently was in their own board meeting. First of all, even though they have petitions at two businesses in Meadowview that people from several STATES have signed, they have been going door to door with this campaign.
As far as the research that E&H presented, the only evidence submitted was that from Love’s. Opinions do not count as evidence. All that has been brought by the opposition is opinions which are biased for a different agenda
for an organized group that protests almost everything that will provide growth to an area. This is not a popularity contest and this decision should be and will be based upon true FACTS. We are lucky we have at least four supervisors who have the ability to sort FACT from OPINIONS and FEARS. Those four supervisors are exactly what Washington Co needs because they do not succumb to any organized group. There is no evidence that this project will cause any harm to the area because
it won’t cause any harm. Meadowview needs this opportunity and Love’s should not be pushed away because of opinions and fears.
