Writer Feels Pride About Glade Spring

I currently call Glade Spring, Va., my hometown, but I have lived in many places – small towns, big cities, other states, another country. In none of those places did I have the privilege of helping bring a town and community back to life as I am doing here.
Several years ago I bought a rundown, turn-of-the-century house, determined to renovate it. I knew its past and I saw its potential. I wanted to effect positive change in the future of Glade by investing in its property.
Now, as a volunteer working alongside both laypeople and council members to revitalize Glade Spring and make long-held dreams a reality, I’m delighted to be a part of something much bigger. Over the past year I have met folks of all ages from all walks of life – all with the sole desire to enhance Glade’s growth. I have observed individuals giving of themselves time and time again. I have watched council members strive to make good decisions on Glade’s behalf.
Seeing so many people join together with similar goals is heartening. Seeing the results is even more rewarding: A beautifully refurbished and landscaped town square, excitement over community events such as Old Railroad Days and the Christmas parade and tree lighting, plans for the new library and Salt Trail connector. Our town is reawakening and that is something to behold.
Is Glade, as a community and as a political body, perfect? No. But I can pretty much guarantee no place on earth is. Occasional imperfections do not diminish our town’s worth.
Many years ago my great-grandmother brought her family down from the mountains to make a new life in Glade Spring. She had hopes and aspirations, just as I and others do today. I take pride in this little corner of Virginia. I watch with enthusiasm what is happening here and look forward to what is to come. And I invite the citizens and friends of Glade Spring to support the good work that is being done.
