Nurse urges patients to show patience

I am writing in response to two previous letters concerning health care professionals.
First, I would like to make the comment that you should not judge until you have walked in someone else’s shoes. I recently graduated from nursing school and already I am seeing the hardships of this demanding profession. Of course I am aware of the harsh attitudes, long waits and difficult situations that patients experience. Health care will never be perfect; it is led by humans and we make mistakes. We get tired and frustrated, too. It saddens me that the public seems to dwell on the negative of health care. The public seems to forget all the good things that doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others do for them.
Please remember that we do things for your safety, not to make you wait or to be difficult. Next time you get a health care professional who seems to be having a bad day, why not say thank you or just offer a simple smile? I know when I am having a bad shift, all it take is one patient to tell me “Thank you for everything you have done for me. I really appreciate it,” and everything I do is worth that simple thank you. Try to look at the positive. Good things do not happen with negatives.

Nurses around here dont make anything hardly. They work very very hard and have nothing to show for it. My wife is a nurse and honestly the politics of it make it the worst job one could have. Its all about rush em in and rush em out. As a patient your only a number. Nurses do their best to make things easy but the bosses at the top dont want that. Whatever you do dont work for Wellmont. A nurse could make more money working in Ethiopia than working for that sorry place. Nurses are far better than any doctor as far as attitude and caring for patients but they have so much stress on them and get paid nothing. Barely above poverty. Next time you see a nurse understand he or she is working hard for you but is the lowest paid health worker there is. They do the work and get none of the pay or thank you.

I always thank them even when I have been made to feel invasive just asking questions. Want people to respect you guys more ? When a patient ask a question don’t pull back like your afraid to answer. I have seen so many Nurses and Doctor shoot strange glances at each other when asking a question about a test or cancer. Makes me think they are avoiding something or misleading me.

So change the behavior and watch Patients change theirs.
