Global warming theory leaves many questions
The Bristol Herald Courier recently ran a large Associated Press story about – gasp – global warming. It is difficult to know what is really right, because each side believes that it is really right. Or at least pretends to.
One problem is that stories like the AP piece leave out one important thing that might help. How much is the earth warming or cooling? The AP said:
“In a blind test, the AP gave temperature data to four independent statisticians and asked them to look for trends, without telling them what the numbers represented. The experts found no “true temperature declines over time.”
What on the Earth did he mean by that? Were there also “no true temperature increases either?” If the true temperature had increased, wouldn’t the writer have said so? If the scientists project far enough, they’ll all be dead by then. Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth” shows New York being flooded by huge tidal waves, which nobody expects, though the notion might appeal to some.
The Wall Street Journal recently published a NOAH chart that showed average global temperature from 1900 to 2000. Deviation from the average was from +.5 degree C to -.25 degree C. With that data, it’s hard to get people worked into a frenzy which can be mitigated only by throwing vast sums of money around.
The AP story said that in 2006, 77 percent of people believed there was scientific evidence for global warming. Now it’s 57 percent. If the trend continues, in 10 years 5 percent will still believe.
Footnote: Recently I was studying Pythagoras who may have been the first scientist. He lived around 450 BC. The Web site http://www.Longrangeweather.com shows that the global temperature in 500 BC was normal, it peaked in 473, and returned to normal by 460 BC.
Aren’t statistics wonderful?

The Corp of Engineers is spending Millions to move century’s old villages in Alaska that are being flooded by rising water or maybe their land is sinking.
It is hard to belive that land is sinking all over the world at about the same rate and salt water is comming in higher and higher.
But then does it matter ?
Mr. Slack it is unfortunate to see that you have fallen prey like so many others to the strategic media manipulation that has taken place regarding climate change.
The “science” behind those who deny climate change is the same as the “science” that was behind the tobacco industry’s attempts to show that smoking had no negative effects on human health. Tobacco companies paid scientists and consultants to argue that there was no sound scientific evidence that secondhand smoke was dangerous even though they knew of the negative health effects. Fossil fuel industries are using the same uncertainty tactic to challenge the science of global warning as the tobacco industries used to confuse the cancer/smoking link debate.
There is absolutely a scientific consensus that climate change is occurring http://bit.ly/cdzos. No one in the climate science community is debating whether changes in CO2 alter the greenhouse effect, or if ocean levels have risen the last 100 years, or if the warming trend is outside the range of natural variability. GISS, NOAA, NAS, SOCC, RS, AGU, AIP, NCAR, AMS, CMOS are all respected institutions specializing in climate, atmospheric, oceanic and earth sciences and have published the same conclusions. 1) our climate is warming 2) the major cause of this warming is the rising levels of CO2 3) the rise in CO2 is due to the burning of fossil fuels 4) if CO2 continues to rise, so will the warming and 5) the climate changes projected will endanger the environmental and threaten human life.
Also, just as an FYI, a single year of cold or warm weather in one region of the globe is not an indication of a trend in the global climate, which refers to a long-term average over the entire planet. Climate skeptics such as yourself may argue that certain pockets of the country have experienced some colder winters here and there, but a brief regional trend does not discount a longer global phenomenon. Measurements show that over the last century the Earth’s climate has warmed overall, in all seasons, and in most regions.
Mr. Slack you have no degree in climate science and are not currently conducting climate research. Do you really think that people are going to believe some LtE contributor who has no background or degree in science, over the thousands of scientists from across the globe who have contributed studies and findings to the IPCC based on the most up to date scientific, technical and socio-economic information from around the world?
I take offense when people intentionally misinform others and attempt to discredit the very well established and agreed upon effects of human activity on global climate. I urge Congress to look beyond the cherry-picked reports and numbers that are cited by skeptics such as Mr. Slack to support a desired point. The truth is, the most respected scientific bodies have stated unequivocally that global warming is occurring, and that people are causing it by burning fossil fuels and cutting down our forests.
