Democrats Also Backed Federal Civil Rights Bill
A recent letter writer claimed that “Republicans almost single handedly passed the Civil Rights Bill of the 1960s with virtually no support from Democrats.” This person needs to check his facts before spouting such stuff.
On the final version which passed, House Democrats voted 153 in favor and 91 against. House Republicans voted 136 in favor and 35 against. On the Senate side, 46 Democrats voted in favor, 22 against. Republicans: 27 in favor and 6 against.
The Southern Bloc, both Democrats and Republicans, vowed to fight against social equality to the bitter end.
Fortunately, through the efforts of Democrats Hubert Humphrey and Mike Mansfield, and Republican Everett Dirksen, justice prevailed and the law was enacted to ban discrimination and segregation.
This writer also dislikes Social Security and Medicare. Fine.
I expect that he will turn it down when he is eligible, making more available for the rest of us.

Oldman/Dad: Once the vote is taken and the bill is active ,it don’t make a s&%t . The votes were tallied and the bill was passed with those votes.
You know the BHC should hire Kathy. She presents the news as they do.
Too bad the vote reocrd does not reflex votes that were changed later out of the public earshot.
It happeneds all the time listen to CSPAN Congressman and Senator have votes changed from naa to yea on votes months even years after the orginal vote.
Kathy, Thank you for this information. However, it did not support your claim. Based on your numbers, the House Democrats voted 37% against and the Republicans voted 20% against. In the Senate, Democrats voted 32% against and the Republicans voted 16% against. In both houses the Democrats were almost 2 to 1 against verus the Republicans.
You have to remember that the Democrats control both the Houses. Looks like you used what we call fuzzy math to make a point. The previous writer was correct.
Anyway, you tried but you got caught.
Who introduced and sponsored the Bill?
