Fight special education changes
I am wondering how many folks with children who have disabilities are aware of the proposed changes in the state’s regulations for special education. The changes are very significant and weighted in the school’s favor.
The proposals seek to reduce the parents’ role in decision-making regarding their child. For instance, the provision for parental consent is about to be removed. This means the school can drop a child from IEP [Individualized Education Program] services without permitting the parents a say.
There are at least 10 major changes in special education law, all of which favor the school and potentially harm the child. Parents must become aware and be heard before this legislation is passed.
For more information, call Melissa Meade at the Appalachian Independence Center at (276) 628-2979, ext. 311, and ask for the "blue sheet" describing the 10 major changes. If you have a child in special education or know someone with a special ed child, it is imperative that you learn about these proposed changes. What you don’t know could hurt you.
