Virginia Intermont College is proud to announce an opportunity for professionals with unfulfilled dreams of becoming a teacher. Individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in another field can become teachers in as little as two or three semesters through Virginia Intermont’s new Licensure Only Program for Degreed Students.
“For many in our region, teaching is an unfulfilled career ambition,” said Dr. Michael Puglisi, president of the college. “True to our mission, Virginia Intermont is dedicated to working with individuals to achieve their dreams and to help the region’s economy grow.”
With a well-established, state-approved teacher education program, Virginia Intermont provides intensive preparation for individuals from various occupational and life experiences who want to become classroom teachers. Through observations, classroom experiences and study of curriculum and instruction, students will acquire the tools and skills needed to build a successful teaching career.
Applicants must possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;

  • Coursework required for the desired teaching area; and

  • Qualifying scores on the professional teacher’s examinations: Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment, Praxis II and the Virginia Reading Assessment (if applicable).

    Testing requirements can be completed while at Virginia Intermont.
    Job prospects for teaching, a rewarding career, are expected to be favorable, with particularly good prospects for teachers in high-demand fields like math and science, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
