Area Colleges Help Prepare Taxes

If taxes have you running scared - turn them over to someone who can help.

Emory & Henry in Southwest Virginia and Milligan College in East Tennessee both have programs aimed at helping area residents
prepare their taxes free of charge.

Seven students enrolled in a spring semester accounting course at Emory & Henry have joined a local tax preparation program that assists Smyth County residents who will be completing a basic federal tax return (Form 1040A or Form 1040EZ).

In its sixth year, the program offered by Cindy Field’s Tax Preparation focuses on individuals who have lower incomes and need assistance with completion of Federal and Virginia Income Tax Returns.

The schedule includes Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday March 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Smyth-Bland Regional Library; Thursday, Feb. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursday, March 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Saltville Library; Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday, March 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chilhowie Town Hall; Tuesday, March 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Marion Senior Center and Thursday, March 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sugar Grove Combined School.

In Tennessee, student at Milligan are doing the same thing. Area residents are eligible to receive free tax assistance through a program developed by faculty and students in Milligan College’s business area. Trained tax preparers are available by appointment only on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through April 15.
