BRISTOL, Va. – Susie Walling’s children got her interested in the presidential election, so when she learned Tuesday that Barack Obama was bound for Bristol, she knew the family had to attend.
Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is scheduled to hold a town hall-style meeting at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Virginia High School. The visit comes just two days after the Illinois senator clenched the Democratic nomination following a six-month battle with Sen. Hillary Clinton. Virginia hasn’t supported a Democrat for president in 44 years but is now considered a battleground, according to the Associated Press.
“Yes, it’s exciting,” Walling said Tuesday night of Obama’s visit. “I have three teenagers who are excited about this election and interested in the candidates. I wasn’t, but they’ve got me excited.”
Walling was among more than 200 who showed up at Virginia High Tuesday night to get tickets to attend Thursday’s gathering. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required, according to a news release from the Obama campaign.
Walling said two of her three children are eligible to vote and one plans to vote for Obama.
Beth Rhinehart of Bristol, Va., was the third person in a line of about 40 people Tuesday night. She was picking up tickets for her three children.
“This is an opportunity for my children to experience seeing a leading presidential candidate,” Rhinehart said. “I think it will be a great thing.”
Come November, Devon Bracher will be eligible to vote and she has already decided to vote for Obama.
“I like the way he brings so much hope to everything,” Bracher said. “I think he really can change things.”
Travis Clark, who also got his tickets Tuesday evening, said he is excited about the senator’s visit.
“I’m kind of shocked,” Clark said. “I’m glad he’s coming. We support him and we want to get all the people we can here.”
About 3,000 people will be admitted. The doors to the gym are scheduled to open at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday.
“They [Obama camp] wanted to come to Southwest Virginia and heard we had a great facility here,” said Virginia High Principal Ina Danko.
She took the call Tuesday morning and helped campaign officials work through the logistics of setting up the event.
“We’re glad for the opportunity to show off our town and our school. We’re kind of excited about it,” Danko said.
Thursday’s event will be the first of two Virginia stops for Obama. At 6 p.m., he is scheduled to attend a rally in Bristow, which is in Northern Virginia.
Ticket distribution for the Bristol event is scheduled to continue from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Virginia High gym at 1200 Long Crescent Drive, Bristol, Va.; the Boucher for Congress campaign office, 137 S. Court St., Abingdon, Va.; and the United Mine Workers office at 2 Right Miners Drive in Castlewood, Va.
For security reasons, those attending should not take bags and personal items should be limited. No signs or banners will be allowed.

What do you mean that “barack and michelle wouldnt look right in the White House”. Please explain that comment bc it sounds quite “wrong.“ Please tell me its because of an educated reason rather than that of someone from the backwoods would say
JBlank…thank you….well put..!!!
WOW! I now understand why I left Southwest VA…because of the ideology and words that come out of your mouths. What about Hillary made you feel that she would able to take this country to the next level and lift us from this **bleep** that Bush put us in. Did you watch the last 3-4 months of the democratic campaign. Hillary acted anything but what you would expect from a Presidential candidate. Look at her voting record, look at her platform…What does the cost of his suit have to do with anything and also how would you imagine that Hillary would understand the plight of the everyday working person. Obama is not getting a free pass for anything…its just that NO ONE can find anything to take issue with on him that he hasnt already told up front…ppl have to try and attack his wife to find anything. STUPID!!! No substance…WTF?!! Have you been watching this campaign and paying attention…I respect that you have an opinion, however it makes absolutely no sense. He is the nominee and unless you want to continue with Bush-style politics, $10/gallon gas and a war that will go on another 4-8 years…you will really get your facts straight, your mind open and hear what this man is saying….listen to what he is trying to do…
Yeah, because God knows Bush and his multi-billion dollar oil buddies are right in line with what the “everday working person” goes through.
Want to talk about redistribution of wealth? Take a look at where your money has been going since the Iraq war, under President Bush. Oil has shot up, forcing pump prices up what, 2 times? 3 times? Seems to me the wealth redistribution has been in play already, with the wealth going to Exxon, Chevron, etc….
It really saddens me that people in our area have to resort to using Obama’s education and race as a method of attacking him. Apparently you Mr. Shockley, could benefit from a bit of Sen. Obama’s education, if all you get out of his campaign is “Socialism”, “one liners” and a “lack of substance.
Want to see a real lack of substance? Take a look at what today’s Republican Party stands for. If you don’t work for big oil or corporate America, and don’t make 100K plus a year, you are nothing to them.
Anyway, keep up the ignorance, fear, uncertainty, and doubt, Mr. Shockley, and we’ll see what happens this November.
Does anyone remember the platform that GWB ran on to beat Gore? CHANGE. Obviously, change can be either good or bad. Change is just a word until Obama actually backs it up with details. I don’t think we will like the details.
What about Obama’s career leads one to believe he can achieve this change? After all, he is with out a doubt the most divisive candidate on either ticket. Has he ever worked with someone across the isle to achieve anything?
Wow a Harvard educated politician with a $500.00 suit who insists that he understands the stuggles of the everday working person…real change?...sounds like the same old song and dance to me. This guy is no more than a secular Socialist with alot of good campaign one liners. A majority people could not tell you what this guy stands for because he has no substance! We have to give him a free pass for having no issues because he is part African American. Mr. and Mrs. America better study this guys voting record in the Senate and hold on to your wallets because he is coming for it. Can anyone say Redistribution of Wealth?
