Video games and fitness – not two activities you would generally put together. But Nintendo’s latest innovation could change all that.
Dubbed Wii Fit, the game uses a weight-sensing Balance Board that resembles a bathroom scale as a “controller,” further bridging the divide between gaming and physical exercise. Maybe going outside isn’t as important after all.
After starting Wii Fit, the user-friendly game will test your Body Mass Index (BMI) and track your progress as you play exercise games that will (most likely) make you sweat.
A few of the games include the tight-rope walk, where players must balance on a rope between two buildings; a skiing and snowboarding simulator that lets you carve through fresh powder; and yoga and workout exercises that will digitize your fitness routine.
While all the games provide you with a strenuous workout, most people will probably find they need to incorporate other aerobic exercises into their routine, if they’re serious about losing weight.
But really, no one wants to get too serious with their games –Wii Fit pretends to be the exciting gateway into exercise, but it’s really the perfect centerpiece to your late night summer parties.
Like the Wii and portable DS consoles, Nintendo’s Wii Fit is trying to change the way we play games.
No longer will unfamiliar players have to fumble with a thumbstick and controller; the motion-sensing Wii remote and the Balance Board gives a whole new interface for people of all ages interested in playing games. Wii Fit comes with the Balance Board and a game, and retails for $90.
But since its release in May to critical acclaim and worldwide success, it has remained scarce in stores. Note that the Wii console is required in order to play Wii Fit.

ABOUT THE INVENTOR
It’s interesting to note that Wii Fit came from Nintendo’s most renowned game designer: Shigero Miyamoto.
Having been the mastermind behind such gaming franchises as Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda and Nintendogs, Miyamoto has created video games’ most beloved franchises.
Similarly, he spearheaded the design of the Wii console, which is essentially changing the entire video game industry – proving his creative mind hasn’t aged a bit.
The New York Times recently hailed Miyamoto as the Walt Disney of his generation, spotlighting his creation of Wii Fit.
