A quiet family cemetery on a mountain top in Hiltons, Virginia was visited by vandals recently.
The McMurray family plot is located almost 2 miles from any paved road in Scott County but that didn’t stop vandals from burning headstones, wreaths and painting 666 on an out building. The vandals also damaged several benches and picnic tables that were used for family events on the property.
Gale McMurray says that due to the remote location of the cemetery the it would hard for the sheriff’s office to patrol the area. McMurray says the family will start keeping a much closer watch on their family plot from now on.

i believe it may be a high school graduation prank (if you could call it that). it could be an initiation of some sort, or maybe just some hooligans that wanted to make it look like that! there is not much that can be done. you could lock a gate somewhere but that wouldn’t work. too many family members of loved ones in the cemetary that need access to the cemetary. could put a gate where the state road ends and hire someone to go up every morning and every night to lock and unlock the gate, but that is a lot to ask of anyone. OR, we could invest in a camera that could be pointed down at the road that would record every tag number that circles the cemetary. there would be lots of good people have a picture of their tag, although i am sure they wouldn’t care. there are cameras that are camoflaged and do not have a flash that goes off at night when a pic is taken. it could be hidden very well and a tag number can be easily ran on the computer at the sheriffs office. that is one sure way if somehow that could be done. it would be nice to have a meeting with any interested party to talk about this dilemna we are in. that is a beautiful place and it is so sad. we can ask the sheriffs office to do extra patrol when possible any hour of the day or night. just some of my thoughts. any comment from anyone concerning this?
I agree. That is my husband’s family cemetary and I have only been there once and I really don’t think I can get there by myself because it so secluded. People should have respect for the dead and the living and leave stuff alone that doesn’t belong to you.. I hope they catch who did this and set an example for those who are thinking about doing something like this…
I agree pistol. I hope the punks that did this get caught and put in jail where they belong. Kids today have absolutely no respect for anyone or anything.
What is wrong with people these days when they can’t find any better way to have fun than desecrating someone’s final resting place. Just another bunch of losers trashing things that aren’t theirs. They need to get a life, get a job, get something and find a less sad way to get their jollies.
