A Bulls Gap man and his girlfriend were both arrested yesterday for their connection to a murder almost two-weeks ago in Hawkins County.

According to police reports, a note found at the murder scene ties the couple to a concrete motive. The note, from the man and his girlfriend, allegedly asks for money from the victim , 56-year-old Jerry Short, who was found shot to death on his living room floor on Aug 24.

The Hawkins County Sheriff Department said they believe the motive for the murder is theft.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office and agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms arrested Michael Ray Baxter, 62, 147 Everhart Road, Bulls Gap, on a federal weapons charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is currently in federal custody, and police say that a First Degree Murder charge against him is pending.

Cynthia Marie Johnson, his girlfriend of the same address, was also arrested and charged with First Degree Murder.
