Dylan Hicks broke his ankle and received road burns after a truck hit him on his bike. His family, and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department are looking for the driver that fled the scene.
Piney Flats, Tenn.—The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department is looking for the driver of a light blue truck that hit a 12-year-old boy on a bike, and fled the scene Thursday afternoon.
Dylan Hicks was riding home from playing basketball at Mary Hughes school, down Austin Springs Road in Piney Flats.
Hicks told us he was hit from behind and pushed forward, then the truck hit his shoulder, knocking him into the next lane.
He crawled onto the side of the road, where a neighbor found him and called 911.
Hicks received a minor fracture on his right ankle, and road burns on his left leg.
He said the driver yelled out his window: “You shouldn’t be in the road!“ Then the driver said, “I’m sorry buddy,“ before he drove off.
“We were upset because the guy didn’t stop and make sure that he was ok,“ said Dylan’s mother, Melissa Hicks. “We felt like he should have waited ‘til the parents, ‘til we got there, or called for help or something for him.“
Dylan said the vehicle that hit him was a baby blue truck, possibly a dually pickup, which is a truck with four wheels on the rear axel.
He said it has a hood ornament, and that the driver looked like an older man with gray hair, and gray facial hair.
If anyone witnessed the accident or can identify the driver of that light blue dually truck, call the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department.

On Austin Springs Rd. there are bikes
most of the time, not only young, But all ages, What people need to remember is that, This is a posted bike route.
I still pray that person,(can’t eat, sleep or do anything but think of and see Dylan laying in the road as he just drives off.) wounder what he would think if this was his child or grandchild?
My heart goes out to the boy who got hit! That’s horrible to be hit and even worse to be left!
I have often worried about children riding their bikes in the road. You really never know if they are going to dart out in front of you when you try to pass them. Passing cyclists in general is fairly dangerous. Roads aren’t wide enough to pass them without getting into the other lane but there is no excuse for hitting any one especially a child.
Sickening. Unfortunately, even if they find the piece of crap he’ll only get a slap on the wrist for this horrific crime. You have to mess with someone’s money to get any real punishment in the nation!
Hey guys,Dylan, bless your heart, what a terrible thing to happen, I hope they find the guy.
Keeping you in my prayers.

Sorry to say .but no, most everyone here in piney is looking for him. Lets keep this going untill he is found, if not he will get away with it.
i dont think that they guy that did this was found…
Does anyone know if this poor excuse of a man has been picked up yet?
this makes me so mad, how could anyone just drive off and leave a child, or anyone laying in the road. I hope this person can’t sleep or think of anything but Dylan laying in the road. We love you Dylan. Your neighbors down the road.
I’m sorry, this guy is not a jerk, knuckle head or anything other than a plain criminal. He didn’t have to be drunk, or hiding drugs because he broke the law when he hit the boy. Tenn. has a 3 foot law - mandating that automobiles and trucks must carefully and safely pass slower vehicles (bikes especially) with a minimum of 3 feet. If this guy hit the boy, he broke the law. When he hit him a second time, to me that is assualt. When he left him on the roadside, that is hit and run. I sure hope the police are seriously looking for him. And I pray for a speedy recovery for the young man.
Which brings up a point. Why do people hate bicyclists so much? My 12 year old son and I (along with other adults and kids) ride our bikes for exercise and recreation. I am amazed at how many people, in all price range of cars and trucks, feel that it is perfectly acceptable to; yell obscene things at us, honk to scare us, throw things at us, or scream at us to “get off the road”.
For those who read this article and the comments, please keep it in mind next time you’re driving and need to pass a cyclist. Next time it could be my son. Or your neighbor, or your friend.
Let’s share the road.
He didn’t stop because he probably has something to hide. No license, driving drunk & or on drugs, I hope he is caught and severly punished!
Thankfully, the young man didn’t suffer severe injuries. I hope he can remember enough details for an arrest to made!
