Gray, Tenn.—As people are starting to travel to their thanksgiving destinations this week, some are thinking of those who wouldn’t have a Thanksgiving without the help of others.
Second Harvest Food Bank and WCQR radio partnered in creating the “Thanksgiving Project.“ They requested just $25 to make food boxes with a turkey and all the trimmings to feed a family this Thanksgiving.
Radio listeners came out in full force, and with more than $27,000, Second Harvest bought enough to feed almost 1250 families this Thanksgiving.
Volunteers worked non-stop for the past two days to make sure as many people as possible have a festive meal.
“We have some people actually come here, actually crying saying thank you because without this happening, they wouldn’t have had a Thanksgiving,“ said volunteer Carl Maples, of U Turn For Christ, “so this is totally awesome.“
Wednesday, Second Harvest will have a mobile food bank at Elizabethton High School, and WCQR will continue taking donated food through the end of the year for its Project 52 food collection.

“More than a million children regularly go to bed hungry in the US, according to a government report that shows a startling increase in the number of families struggling to put food on the table.President Barack Obama, who pledged to eradicate childhood hunger, has described as “unsettling” the agriculture department survey, which says 50 million people in the US – one in six of the population – were unable to afford to buy sufficient food to stay healthy at some point last year, in large part because of escalating unemployment or poorly paid jobs. That is a rise of more than one-third on the year before and the highest number since the survey began in 1995.“ from the guardian.co.uk website.
“To date, the total cost of war that has been allocated by Congress is $915.1 billion, with $687 to Iraq and $228 to Afghanistan (not all numbers add due to rounding)“from the website:nationalpriorities.org.“If you tremble indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mine.”-Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara. I tremble idignation at this injustice,do you?We spend all the money on war and killing and yet we will not feed our own children! The president says it is unsettling! Now we are hearing he will send and spend more of our beautiful young people, and billions of dollars we need here at home,in a stupid,non-sensical war!Why do these people that run this country have to interfere with other countries? And we wonder why the Muslim people in the mid-east hate us!We won’t stay out of their countries! We bring death and suffering to their doorsteps.Where is this presidents compassion?Where is the hope for our hungry, our poor, our homeless, our neglected? This is not hope I can believe in!
Why doesn’t the white wing protest these things at their tea parties? They like to say they are a voice of the christian peoples of America.Jesus, from what I can read of him, cared for the hungry and the poor. Are these white wing people like Jesus(christian means “christlike”)?
No,they are not. They are hypocrites that the bible Jesus condemned!
The millions upon millions of poor and working poor alike, the ones who must decide day to day whether to eat or pay a bill to stay warm, those who must decide to either take their sick child to the doctor now when they need to go,or wait because they know that the cost of the visit will keep them from buying food or paying rent. Those married couples with small children, who can find no better jobs than the minimum wage at the walmart or mcdonalds, who both must work and one of them work a second job just to get by!The hungry, the homeless,on and on we go.These people need to have a party! They will far outnumber the white wingers who squeal annoyingly and constantly, supported by the rich who run the media in this country.“The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.”“ -Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara. We must make the democrats and the republicans and the white wing and the filthy rich tremble!“Let the ruling classes tremble at a communist(Origin of the word communist 1835–45; communiste. common and ist.Are not the oppressed in this country the commonest? The black, the hispanic, the homosexual, the poor, our hungry children, the worker who works for next to nothing in pay?) revolution. The proletarians(the lowest or poorest class of the people)have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Workingmen of all countries, unite!“ -Karl Marx
