Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama will return to Southwest Virginia today to hold a town hall meeting in Lebanon, Virginia.
Obama’s campaign says during the meeting, he plans to discuss his economic plans, creating jobs and ending the nation’s dependence on imported oil.

Today marks Obama’s fourth visit to Southwest Virginia since winning the primaries, but his first visit since securing the Democratic nomination for president.
Even though tickets to Obama’s speech at Lebanon High School are long gone, Tricities.com has complete coverage here with our partner news teams at the Bristol Herald Courier and News Channel 11.

To bring you reports on the atmosphere leading up to the candidate’s formal event, reporters from all three of our newsgathering teams will share information throughout the day in Tricities.com’s Reporter’s Notebook.  That’s where you can comment on the day’s events as well, before, during and after the town hall meeting by posting comments to each of the entries.

Tricities.com will provide a live stream of the town hall meeting at Lebanon High School starting at 4:30pm, along with the blog maintained by the team of reporters from News Channel 11, TriCities.com, and the Bristol Herald Courier.  Tricities.com reporter Brent Carney will talk with local Republican representatives in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia about the town hall meeting and whether there are any plans for Republican candidate John McCain to visit the area.

Join us for complete coverage and interactive conversations throughout the day on Tricities.com as we bring you the events surrounding Barack Obama’s visit to our region, live coverage from News Channel 11 and in-depth analysis of all the events in the Bristol Herald Courier.

I think the important thing here is that Obama came to Lebanon.  The others went to Fairfax.

I agree with the previous post that states “As long as everyone has equal access then it is not a problem.“
However, I remember in 1966 Pat Jennings was allowed to speak in the new Council High School, while his opponent, William Wampler was denied a speaking engagement at the school.  That was, and in my opinion, still is typical Buchanan County politics.
My question though for all the residents of Southwest Virginia is simply this.  What does Barak Obama hope to accomplish visiting Lebanon?  Is he trying to borrow a line from the McCain campaign that has promised better living standards for small town America?

There is no constitutional problem at play. Schools are often used to host speakers, religious services, meetings, and other events. They are ideal because they typically hold a large number of people. This does not mean it should be viewed as a political endorsement by a county or school system. The fact is there are Democrats that pay taxes to support the school just as there are Republicans and others that have. As long as everyone has equal access then it is not a problem.

Do tell us where you think the appropriate place is for such a gathering…in a pasture somewhere?
Or, do you propose the candidates rent a tent? Perhaps the govt. should build auditoriums across the country to be used twice every four years?
Actually, the lights are probably on everyday until 6 in the gym—don’t you think??

As a taxpayer, I resent the fact that a school is being used for political purposes. It seems to me that this might be a constitutional question—public funds being used to promote a political agenda??
