Washington Co., Tenn.—A school in Washington Co., Tenn. joined an international initiative this morning. It’s called the International Walk To School Day, and it started in Great Britain in 1994. All fifty U.S. States participate, but Lamar is the first in this area.
“We’re encouraging physical fitness,“ says principal, Dr. Selina Blevins. “We are protecting our families and their healthy lifestyles; we’re investing time and effort and we’re connecting to not only our school community, but school communities across the nation today.“
All the kids that participated got a goodie bag with healthy snacks when they got to school.
The school also held group walks during the day, and Lamar PTA and staff say they hope to continue healthy habits and the Walk To School Day tradition in the future.
The Washington County Health Council plans to expand the program to other schools by next year.
