Erwin, Tenn.—A day after an act of vandalism outraged the region, the search continues for those who did the damage. Yesterday, the Erwin Police and the Unicoi Sheriff’s Department found the flags that hung in the Veteran’s Memorial Park burned in a trash can.
Today, new flags fly high as local veterans stopped by to pay their respects.
Erwin Police Chief, Reagan Tilson said that his department has received many calls, and they are sifting through the tips to find any leads.

I still feel sickened about this. Who could be so cruel and mean. Undoubtedly they don’t know what it is like to fight for what you have, or stand in front of a casket of a loved one who lost their life fighting for what we have.
I was taught as a young child that the American Flag should be respected, when taking it down, it should never touch the ground. These people that done this are very likely teens or in their young twentys, and have no respect for anyone.
I wish they would turn themselves in. My guess would be that these “people” have done something like this before, and they think it is funny or something. WELL IT’S NOT!!! When I heard of this happening, Yes, I cried, cause it made me literally sick to my stomach to hear and see such disrespect to our verterans and to the United States of America.
I have several family members and friends that have faught for this great country, and I also have several that are still in the military fighting for us. If the people who done this horrific act, had to spend the time in war, as our souldiers do, it would change their minds about what they did.
Again, I hope they turn themselves in and I hope their punishment is harsh. There is no room in the U.S.A. for people who disrespect America, and who are demeaning to our great country and veterans. May God have mercy on their soul!
