An off-duty Smyth County, Virginia police officer was killed in a car crash over the weekend.

Deputy Christopher Paschal, 37, with the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office was driving north-bound in Interstate 81 in the morning on Jan. 2 when he lost control of his Mitsubishi SUV.

Paschal ran off the road to the right and turned the vehicle over twice. The accident was likely weather-related and due to icy roads, according to officials. However, the accident is still under investigation by the Virginia State Police.

Paschal was transported to Bristol for medical treatment where he passed away on Sunday. His wife and daughter, who were also in the SUV, were uninjured.

This breaks my heart. Chris was such a great guy. It was my pleasure getting to work with him at the Sheriff’s office from 2001-2004. May God Bless his family during this difficult time.

Sad to hear, prayers for him and his family. Very sad. How come no one has looked into why the worst road conditions in a long time occured that day. I think the budget problems is leading to restricted salt and road clearing and is directly to blame for most of the over 100 accidents that day.

My point is it is sad a person lost their life and leaves behind this family and it may have been avoided. God bless the family.
