Program Teaching Infants To Save Themselves From Drowning

Every year in the U.S., 4,000 children die from drowning accidents, while another 12,000 suffer some kind of permanent brain damage. A new program in the Tri-cities is aiming to help lower those numbers by teaching those young children to save themselves. Cindy Jones is a certified Infant Swim Resource instructor. She says this program teaches kids as young as 6 months old how to float on their own, giving parents time to get to them and save them.

Jones is quick to point out that these skills are a great tool for survival, but is not the most important line of defense. “The first line of defense is that you watch your children,“ says Jones, “and the second is barriers.“ Parents who have had their kids in the program say it gives them a peace of mind they wouldn’t otherwise have. “I can’t put a price on the skills that Adam knows now,“ says Kristi Krcal about her two year old son.
