Spruce Pine, N.C.—A fire overnight at the Unimin Plant in Spruce Pine, N.C. forced neighbors to evacuate to avoid potential hazardous chemicals in the air. The fire was put out by 5:30 a.m. Sunday, and residents were allowed back to their homes later in the morning. Firefighters came from across the region. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Investigations by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will continue during daylight hours.
