A North Carolina couple continue to try and recover money stolen from a purse they left in a parking lot.Red Bays and Donna Davis from Bakersville, North Carolina are trying to get back more than $800.00 that was stolen after Davis left her purse in a shopping cart at the Johnson City Wal-Mart parking lot in May.
Kelly A. Story was arrested for the crime and charged with theft over $500.00. Even though the entire thing is caught on surveillance tape, justice hasn’t come easily for the North Carolina couple.
“It’s been a nightmare,“ Bays said.
After this husband and wife left the Wal-Mart parking lot, it didn’t take them long to realize that Davis’ purse was missing. They soon went back to the parking lot. By this time the purse had been turned in to Wal-Mart employees. When Red and Donna got it back, more than $872.00 was missing.
“The way the economy is a dollar is a lot of money anymore, but you take that dollar and add $871.00 to it and it’s a real sick feeling,“ said Bays.
Red and Donna are frustrated because Story was released on bond and has failed to show up in court. A Washington County, Tennessee judge recently issued an arrest warrant for Story.
“Criminals shouldn’t be allowed to run the streets and steal peoples property,“ said Bays.
Bays and Davis hope that they will get their money back someday, but they are not counting on it.
“There’s no guarantee that they will catch her to prosecute, there is no guarantee that even if they do catch her that we will get the money back,“ Bays said.
Red and Donna admit they are at fault for not realizing the purse was still in the cart when they drove off and they have some advice to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
“Chain you pocket book and your wallet to your wrists, your arm, your waist, anything,“ said Bays.
Another court date has not been set for Story.
