New Law Targets Bullying
A new law went into affect on Wednesday that prohibits bullying in schools.A new law went into affect on Wednesday that requires school systems throughout Tennessee to punish any student who is bullying another student.
“The more that we monitor these types of situations with children, the more we are involved with it, the more it solves the problem. said Michael Barrett, parent.
Dave Chupa with Johnson City Schools said bullying is something they’ve been trying to prevent for years.
“We’re going to try and stop it as soon as we no about it as early as we can,“ Chupa said.
Experts say bullying doesn’t have to be violent. Students can also bully their classmates through a text message or even an email.
Chupa said they will look into any situation that may be bullying and determine the type of punishment. He said it could be anything from a verbal warning to a suspension.

Bullying in schools and churches is not something new. This area is especially prone because parents do not teach there children tolerance of people being different. I hope this new law reaches further than the school system. East Tennessee and Southwest Virgina have a long way to go in fighting intolerance. I was raised here and to this day i have horrible memories of being bullied and laughed at. The time to change is now. We shouldn’t have to pass a law to make us treat each other like human beings…
My daughter was bullied in the church youth group far more than she ever was at school.
This is a law that is far overdue. No kid should ever walk into their school under the physical, verbal or mental threat from another; and no kid should ever be allowed to produce these threats to another, in or out of school. It’s sad we’ve come to the state getting involved, but that’s where we are and the law is needed.
