Piney Flats, Tenn.—Modern Forge, a company based in Piney Flats that heats and shapes steel, confirmed they let 33 workers go this week.
The company announced those layoffs Thursday. They took effect Friday morning.
Modern Forge doesn’t work directly for the big three automakers, but they do have ties to the industry through post-production maintenance.
Human Resources Manager Jerry Dempsey said the layoffs are unusual, and the company’s first since 1991.
“I hope to have the majority of these people back,“ Dempsey said. “These were good people. We’re not trimming bad wood here.“
