A Washington County, Tennessee School Board member is now under censure by the board, after he admitted to making a lewd sexual gesture in a classroom at David Crockett High School in early October.
That board member, Keith Ervin, also admitted to using profanity in front of students. Last night, the school board listened to Ervin’s apology where he stated the following. “I shouldn’t have said what I said…I guess I was trying to act like I was 18 again. I made a mistake. I never would’ve dreamed the kid would be upset with me,“ said Ervin.
Soon after, Chairman Phillip McLain issued a motion of censure, instead of starting the process to remove him from office. “Mr. Ervin’s a fine individual, he’s a good board member, he cares about the school, he cares about the budget process we go through, and he cares very much about the children,“ said McLain.
The board unanimously approved the censure. It states Ervin will not be allowed on any campuses within the Washington County school system during school hours without a member of the school’s management team. He will remain on the school board for the rest of his term.

To thomashenry,
First of all, I have no knowledge about Washington County Tennessee schools. However, your post says exactly what needs to be said concerning MOST public school systems. I can’t understand how, or why, these types of situations exist and very few people ever discuss it. Oh, I certainly understand why teachers won’t come forward. Telling the whole truth would likely cost them their jobs. The leaders have this thing down pretty good.
Many public school systems are more corrupt than average tax paying citizens could ever imagine. The goal of the leaders seems to be to keep just the right people happy, and not complaining.
It seems today’s public school leaders care little about what young people are learning. I wonder what their main goals actually are?
Thanks for your post. It was great!!!!
Throw this bum and all his buddies out now. Yesterday would not have been soon enough.
Danny Good was recently hired as the athletic director at Daniel Boone High School. I am curious! How did he get a job that he helped create? I wonder if Danny getting the A.D. job is unethical? Danny does not even have a college degree. Sounds like confilict of interest to me. Hiring him is telling the teachers and administrators who have worked hard to get certified to teach children are of lesser value. It seems that unethical behavior is going around quite a bit these days in Washington County. Keith Ervin has waded around Wasington County Schools for the past three years intimidating faculty, staff, and coaches. I am a bit surprised that many of Keith’s bad behaviors have not come to light until now. It has been said that other board members go to the schools in Washington County during extra curricular activities and intimidate teachers and coaches. When is all this going to stop? Children are first and the uneducated board members know nothing about education outside of when they were a student themselves. The board members, especially the uneducated ones need to stay with policy making (which is a scary thought too) and let the educators do the teaching. The community is stirring about this topic and I hope they continue to get involved.
Lipstick on a pig comes to mind.
Dear Deeb, the problem here as in any other upcoming election is that the attention span/memory of the average American is about like that of a mosquito. By the time his re-election comes up, most citizens will have forgotten the exact specifics and will only remember his name as a recognizable incumbent. It is the responsibility of the voting public to remember these incidents and vote these offenders out of office. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of confidence that enough people will remember the issues unless there is a grass roots campaign that springs up to keep these facts in the forefront of the public’s consciousness. Tea parties should not just be to complain about national elected officials. Local officials should be held to a higher standard as well.
To 76BLAZ,
My “high horse?“ I don’t quite understand what that means in this situation.
It seems you’re saying that you know of kids doing the same thing this school board member did?? Am I right? If so, what’s your point? Are you saying that a kid did something like this in school, and actually got some punishment? If that happened, and you can prove it, you need to congratulate whoever the administrator is that handed down that punishment.
Most administrators would warn a student for something like this. If the behavior continued, then the student would get warning after warning after warning. And dependeing on who the parents were, the student may not even get a warning. Afterall, the goal of most administrators is to keep parents very happy, and with few complaints.
Does my saying this still have me on some high horse? I’ll tell you what….let’s forget horses, and any other animals you tend to like. Let’s talk about reality.
What comes around goes around is all I have to say about Mr.Ervin. He thinks since he is on the school board he can run Washington County schools. He costed an innocent teacher their job, along with other county employees their jobs after promising their jobs “wouldn’t be cut” Too bad his job wasn’t cut. Its sad people trust this man as a leader for their childeren, not knowing he was a threat to them.
This is a man who walks into crockett and thinks he can just do whatever he wants to. He is very aggressive, uses foul language and likes drama. He is the reason we have no more FFA Alumni. His intention to get elected on the school board was to get Mr.Rowland out.Ok Mr.Rowland is out and now its time for you to go. This is a man that lied to me after i help get him elected. He promised to help all but he has only chosen a select few to help.Just remember voting time will be here before we know it…Guess who won’t get my vote? Shame on you for acting the way you did and just got a slap on the wrist….
When obama visited a classroom and told the story of American soldiers loosing their lives every time he clapped his hands and a student told him “dumda$$ stop clapping your hands"You never heard an outcry for him to be removed from office.
To Farmer
I disagree with that because I’ve seen this being done in a school with a child that was in school with my child.
Using bad langage to another child. So get off your high horse.
