The Booker T. Washington School has not been used for anything other than storage since the early 1960's but a new deal may soon see the old building serving a new purpose.

The Booker T. Washington School in Jonesborough hasn’t been used for its intended purpose since the early 1960s but a new deal may breathe new life into an historic building.
The school, located near Jonesborough’s downtown, was built in the early 1940s to service African-American students in Washington County and has been closed since the early 1960s. Since the school’s closure the county has used the building for storage.
On Monday night the Jonesborough BMA voted to accept a deal with the Washington County School System to take possession of the building for future use as a possible cultural arts center. The town of Jonesborough would pay the school system an annual fee of $25,000 for use of the structure.
The new name of the building will be The McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School.
