Applications for the Johnson City Police Department’s Junior Police Academy are now being accepted.

The academy is geared towards area youth, male or females, between the ages of 14 and 18. The academy will be held at the Johnson City Police Department Training Grounds during the week of July 13-17, 2009.

The program focuses on young adults who have an interest in the law enforcement profession. It has been designed to take the mystery out of police procedures and policies while informing and educating the cadets involved toward police officers and their role in society.

The cadets will attend a 40-hour course climaxing in a team-oriented competition that involves skills, knowledge, and abilities they have learned through interesting and knowledgeable instruction.
During this week of instruction, the cadets experience what it is like to go through a real police academy and, although not as comprehensive or demanding, the cadets will learn the same skills.

“The purpose of the Junior Police Academy is to provide a service to the youth of this area by allowing them to see first-hand what a police officer does on daily basis and to give them the opportunity to discover if this is a career that they might want to pursue,” said Chief John Lowry.

It will also aid in adding potential participants to the Johnson City Police Department’s Explorer Program.

Anyone interested in participating in this academy can contact Officer Terry Hardin through Johnson City Police Department’s Community Relations Office at (423) 434-6121, Glenda Aschenback at (423) 434-6170, or come by Johnson City Police Department Records at 601 E. Main Street to pick-up an application. Deadline for applications is June 30, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. Class size is limited to 24 students.
