Power thunderstorms Thursday afternoon tore down trees, limbs, and power lines, severing service to hundreds of homes in the Kingsport AEP District.  As of noon Friday, almost 680 homes still were without power.

“We have a number of relatively small outage areas, and those are generally harder to deal with and take much longer,“ said John Shepelwich, AEP spokesman.

The largest concentration of homes without power was in the Sullivan Gardens community with 140 customers affected by the storm that blew through the area just after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Scattered outages also were keeping AEP crews busy across Sullivan County and Southwest Virginia.

AEP crews hoped to have power restored to all customers by 6 p.m. Friday, Shepelwich said.
