NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Bristol Herald Courier has won 10 journalism awards, including three by reporter Daniel Gilbert, from the Tennessee Associated Press Managing Editors. Honored during a banquet Saturday night in Nashville were:
* Second place, Gilbert, Michael L. Owens and Gary B. Gray, daily deadline reporting, Bristol quadruple homicide
* Third place, Allen Gregory, sports-outdoors reporting, for a feature on Rufus Hurt, a 61-year-old Bluff City, Tenn., enthusiast in the growing sport of Cowboy Action Shooting
* First place, Gilbert, business news, for a story about a $534,000 Carrie Underwood concert at East Tennessee State University overdrawing the school’s concert bank account by $209,000
* Third place, Gilbert, business news, for a story about a congressional tax break awarded to auto-racing tracks as part of the federal bailout
* Second place, J. Todd Foster, for editorials on the new Sullivan County director of schools, a dentist involved in a fatal boating accident and congressional cowardice
* Third place, Andrea Hopkins, for editorials on the Virginia Dominion Power plant in Wise County, earmarks by Congressman David Davis and Davis’ stand on immigration
* Second place, David Crigger, Andre Teague and Earl Neikirk, online slideshow, for photographs from last year’s Sharpie 500
* Second place, Neikirk, feature photography, for a shot of a fly fisherman casting in the fog
* First place, Crigger, sports photography, for a shot of a baseball collision at first base
* Honorable mention, Crigger, for a collision on the soccer field.
