Hands On! Museum Awarded Grant by Citi Foundation

Hands On! Regional Museum recently received a $40,000 grant from the Citi Foundation’s North America Community Grants Program.
Jeff Jones, President of the Gray, Tennessee Citi site, and Nancy Harris presented the check to the Hands On! Board and staff during a recent Museum Board Meeting. This award, the largest private foundation grant ever presented to Hands On!, will fund a two-part financial responsibility program through workshops offered at the Museum and at ten area after school programs. The remaining funds will purchase additional interactive components that complement the Museum’s popular Kids Bank & Credit Union exhibit.
Museum educators will travel off site to provide the “Change Is Good” outreach workshops for students enrolled in the designated after school programs. Using several lessons with hands-on activities and games, each lesson meets multiple Tennessee educational standards on financial education. The participating children also receive two free visits to Hands On! Museum and piggy banks containing $1 to encourage them to grow their savings. Hands On! will also present each after-school program with financial games to reinforce these lessons throughout the year.
New exhibit components funded by this grant in the Kids Bank & Credit Union include:
*A “One in a Million” sorter to demonstrate ratios and probability;
*A “Measure Me with Coins” display to teach coin recognition and measuring;
*A 7’ x 10’ “Coin Mural” to teach estimation and counting;
*A Penny Press with four different designs to illustrate the different metals used in making coins and teach budgeting; and
*Additional interactive lessons led by Museum educators to teach young learners the financial literacy basics on spending, saving, credit, and making change.
Financial literacy workshops sponsored by this Citi Foundation Grant on the basics of checking, saving, and managing credit for adults and children age 4 and older will be offered at Hands On! beginning January 22. I saw this morning on a national news show that a LARGE bank had bankrolled the Rose Bowl to the tune of 45 billion dollars.Why in the world are our tax dollars being given to banks for it to be spent in ways like this??? There are so many other worthwhile places that the dollars could be put to use other than a parade, of all things. We as taxpayers have to account to the government for all our monies…why are the banks at liberty to spend these dollars anyway they wish, with no accountability to the government, or anyone? It does not make good sense.
I think the companies that are getting bailout money should be scraping every penny..not handing out. I mean I understand that this was a donation but how can a company that can’t stand on it’s own two feet give a donation like that…I don’t have the money to donate right now, so the government is more or less forcing me by giving it to Citi to give out!!!!
At least Citi is giving some of that money back to the community - which is a good thing.
More Federal bailout money. Man its nice the federal government gives these guys money so they do not fail and they continue to give money away. Nice…
