UPDATE:  No Guns Allowed In Johnson City City Parks

» 83 Comments | Post a Comment

A new state law in Tennessee is creating some controversy. It will allow people with gun carrying permits to bring handguns to parks. The new state law does allow for city and county leaders to opt out of the law. State leaders say the law was designed to make state parks safer. But those who use city parks like this one in Bristol, don’t believe the law should apply here. Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey said the law was designed to make state parks safer. City and county governments have until September 1 to decide to opt out of the new law.

Thursday night, Johnson City City Council members unanimously voted to prohibit guns in city parks, with the exception of trained law enforcement personnel.

We could meet on the sidewalk in front of Jane’s Lunchbox.

how many pro gun people would be willing to meet at a local park on a sat or Sunday afternoon to pass around a written petition? I’m tired of these elected servants not listening to our opinion! Time for Action

David, I was more than happy to sign your petition although I am not even of age to own a handgun. However if I was in danger in a park, I would love to have you or any other legal gun permit holder within reach!

I am a permit holder, think this is the dumbest thing I have heard the city do.I think if they are going this far there should be metal detectors at each park to be sure there are no illegal guns there.

Everyone who has written who thinks it is o.k to carry a gun in the Park should be posting comments and writing to the Kingsport Police Department involving the killing of the dog by a police officer.
The police officer chased a suspect who was involved in suspicious activity and jumped the fence of a homeowner and shot the dog when he came at the officer. The senior officer said the officer had seconds to act. Now, what if the homeowner was standing there with a gun protecting his property (someone had just jumped the fence prior
to this) and the officer comes bounding in the dark over the fence and both have guns and (as the senior officer stated), had seconds to act before he shot the dog. The homeowner has a legal gun and seconds to act. The dogs instead were protecting their property and had seconds to act.
What does this have to do with carrying guns in the park? The homeowners rights to protect his property were violated as much as you say yours are to carry a gun in the park yet I did not see a single post from any you on this subject.
Your rights are being gradually taken away and you do not have a clue as to how they are doing it. Anyone who carries a gun permit should help put a stop to what has happened in Kingsport.
Which is more important: carrying a gun in Johnson Cities Parks or stopping Kingsport from violating homeowners rights?

I took my permit class at Mountain Tactical. I thought the instructor said he had to send the targets off too. Maybe he said he kept them, I can’t remember. I know we shot close to 200 rounds of ammo though. I’ve had some success with the internet petition at state level before, I thought this could be a good idea as well. If anyone has any better ideas feel free to contact me, DGillettex@charter.net

To get your permit you need 8hrs of instruction from a state certified instructor.
Your written test is 30 questions however the instructor has the option of adding 20 more.  You shoot 48 times total.  12 rounds from 3 yards, 24 rounds from 7 yards and 12 rounds from 15 yards.  Your score is either hit or miss. A center shot is the same value as a shoulder shot as long as it’s in the black.
You need 70% on written and 70% on shooting to pass.  Your class is about $50.  The DMV will take $115.00.
Your target does not go anywhere.  It’s yours to keep.  Your score is recorded however and kept by the instructor for I believe 5 years.

What you need is signatures and addresses on paper to present to the commision.  Make sure all signatures are registered voters.  That might get their attention.  My guess is the commission don’t give a rats behind about an internet poll.  Now we can vote them all out at the next election.  But sadly most people have a bad memory.
When Mayor Myron stated she would ask you for your gun if you came into her business I spit out my coffee.
Mayor what is your qualifications to handle firearms?  You scare me with your ignorance of the subject.

You have to be at least 21 years of age. Pass a state and local background check. You have to take a 4 hour classroom covering the legalities of carrying a firearm including when you can use deadly force and when you cant. Then you take a written test to see if you understand what you learned. Next your have to qualify on the range at different distances and prove you can hit a target, clear jams and safely handle a firearm. I believe its a minimum of 200 rounds. The targets are sent by the instructor with your certificate of completion to the state. Also its not cheap to get one. You need a decent firearm, then the class is anywhere from $50-$80 depending on where you take it. Plus the cost of your ammo for the class. In my case I shot a Glock 30, in 45ACP. A box of ammo for it costs $20 for 50 rounds of range ammo or $20 for 20 rounds of Hollow point. Then there’s a fee at the DMV when you go to send off for your permit after you pass the class, which when I took it was $115 although I heard they were going to lower it to $75. Then it takes up to 90 days to clear the State before it is mailed to you. So lets see all in all to be able to carry including the cost of my Glock which was $600 bux, ammo, Instructor fee, State fee and a holster I’ve spent around $900 dollars to protect myself.
