UPDATE:  No Guns Allowed In Johnson City City Parks

» 83 Comments | Post a Comment

A new state law in Tennessee is creating some controversy. It will allow people with gun carrying permits to bring handguns to parks. The new state law does allow for city and county leaders to opt out of the law. State leaders say the law was designed to make state parks safer. But those who use city parks like this one in Bristol, don’t believe the law should apply here. Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey said the law was designed to make state parks safer. City and county governments have until September 1 to decide to opt out of the new law.

Thursday night, Johnson City City Council members unanimously voted to prohibit guns in city parks, with the exception of trained law enforcement personnel.

Church sets up a day for guns. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)

“He said recent church shootings, including the killing Sunday of a late-term abortion provider in Kansas, which he condemned, highlight the need to promote safe gun ownership. The New Bethel Church event was planned months before Dr. George Tiller was fatally shot in a Wichita, Kan., Lutheran church.“

Ron, Its not about feeling safe. We carry guns as an added insurance policy. I’m guessing you have auto ins, if you do, why do you have it? Do you plan on wrecking today? Have life ins? plan on dying today? See where I’m going with this?

I’m guessing that a permit holder will carry a gun for a life time and never come close to needing it. But if you need it then nothing else will work at that point. Kinda like all the ins you carry, pay for it all your life and hope you never need it.

And as for the church remark, just google church shootings and read for a while, maybe you won’t feel so safe there either. One of the last church shootings was halted by a permit holding security lady, had she not had a gun that day many, many more would of died.

I have been to many Little League games over the years and I can see there might be a potential problem with an over zealous cop trying to be a TOP COP and an irate Little League parent carrying a gun.
My guess is that if you do not feel safe in Johnson Cities Parks, you are not going to feel safe in Church either.

Eatn Please stop drinking the kool aid man. Most of us who carry have paid a lot of money to have a secure holster, were not shoving them down our pants like the guys your protecting(Non-Legal carriers,Thugs). Also I assure you I’m not going to leave a $600 dollar glock laying around the park. I’m going to post a story from Virginia, hopefully you will read it. It starts as follows:“ Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - As violent crime rates continue to drop in states that allow citizens to carry concealed firearms, some of those states are reconsidering the limits they place on that constitutional right. “Women have been raped and murdered in parks, so I think they would want to have a firearm for protection,“ he said. “You also have cases where people who are out in the parks have been attacked by a small gang of people, and [the criminals] will be armed despite any type of ban.“

Pratt also argued that CCW permit holders are typically some of the most responsible and well behaved of citizens. The statistics appear to bear that out.

Virginia issued 172,347 CCW permits between July 1995 and April 2002.

During that same period, 0.2 percent of those permits (372) were revoked for any reason, including crimes committed that did or did not involve a firearm, medical deficiencies and individuals who moved out of state but did not surrender their permits. The average number of CCW permit revocations nationwide is 0.5 percent.

The Huskies—no this means that they won’t have to worry about a permit holder who drops a loaded gun, a kid finds it and accidentally shoots themself or another kid.

Does this mean that the city of Johnson Ciy is going to be liable for damages (legal action) if someone goes on a ‘shooting spree’ in a city park?? THEY did, after all, take away the right of responsible permit holders to defend themselves and their family members.

This is a crock, if the state deemed those of us safe and responsible enough to issue us a CCW Permit then the elected officals should honor that and not put restrictions on where and when we can carry our firearms.  I use the boat ramp at Winged Deer frequently and with all the man cave crap going on and all the other crap in our parks that the law isn’t there to stop I will have a way of protecting myself and family.  Let me know when and where that petition is and I will be there.
